Weaning

Hi ladies Is everyone sort of… culinary experts by now? Baby is seven months in a week but he’s really just experimenting at this stage. We don’t even eat every day if we have a busy one. Am I messing this up? He enjoys what we’ve tried so far but he’s really just playing with the food and feeling the different textures etc in his mouth. Sometimes I see mums making these extravagant lunches and I think… am I completely behind? If anyone recommends a great weaning book to help me along a bit, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks in advance x

I try to do things that are as close to what we eat as possible. For example, this morning we had the same porridge together. For dinner last night we had cottage pie, so I made her a beef patty, a potato and carrots. If it’s a roast, I make all the same veggies for her just without salt and she gets a drumstick with most of the meat removed.

@Liza that makes sense! Thanks

There’s no perfect one way to do it, don’t get caught up in comparing yourself you’re doing great as long as your little one is fed and happy! There’s a lot of pressure in the weaning process, I’m personally taking it slow because we’re focusing on my boy’s gut health since he’s had horrible eczema even on my exclusion diet. Boots have had a free weaning book on the parenting club, it’s by Ella’s kitchen that might be a good place to start. Or you could write your own rules, we’re going baby led weaning route with stock, broth, finger foods, foods mixed with breast milk or formula and looking at introducing fermented foods in the next few days

@Mariam thank you x

We're following the guide set out in the "How to wean my baby" book by Charlotte Stirling-Reed. It literally guides you through the first 30 days and beyond. We also have "What mummy makes" book for a little later so we can enjoy meals together.

I follow how to wean my baby too, but like you, some days are super busy and we don’t even give him any solids then! But usually, he has mashed banana or rusk for brekkie and then a bit of textured / pureed food later when we have our tea. Not much, just little amounts. We let him lead the way (not exactly BLW as such) but in terms of how much he wants to eat etc. you’re not messing it up! It’s whatever suits you and your family! He would be crying or showing you he’s hungry if he was missing out! You’ve got the rest of his life to make extravagant meals…! We are big foodies so we thought we’d be doing all kinds by this stage but honestly there’s time for that, at this stage he’s still experimenting with flavours and textures and it’s still fun like that! Don’t stress, it’s absolutely fine! Xx

@Angela oh great I’ll check this book out thanks. Sometimes I just feel like I need telling exactly what to do 🤣 too many decisions

@Mol thank you! Xx
