Toddler frightened at the park

My toddler (18 month old) has suddenly become really frightened at the park. Doesn’t want to go on swings or the slide. He’ll climb up the ladders on some smaller slides but not go down them, just climbs back down! He does go down on our laps though. Is this a phase? Has anyone had anything similar and come out of it? I don’t want him to be scared of things this young! He walks really well, was an early walker and is really sturdy on his feet. He is just learning to jump now too. Climbs on the sofas etc at home.. I was thinking it’s probably a phase but his childminder keeps mentioning it which is making me feel concerned… the other kids there aren’t scared. Any tips very welcome! Thank you xxx

I’m a late twos/early threes teacher but I’ve worked with kids newborn up so I’ve done a lot of workshops and classes, child psychology is one of the big ones. Unless you know for certain that something happened at the park to cause fear, it’s likely a phase and you’ll want to treat it as one, he’s coming up on two years which is typically when kids start to experience fear. It just means he’s developing cognitively, and is mentally healthy. Just talk through the fear but remember you are still talking to a toddler, they aren’t rational so it will probably take some time to get over the fear.

@Christine thank you for the reassurance!! We’re not pushing him but will keep encouraging! Xx
