@Elizabeth I know I'm really worrying about it?? I had my first at lister and had not the best experience so stayed with Luton this time and now second guessing myself!! You can see all the statistics on Luton and Dunstable university hospital maternity page
L&D is a great hospital and all the staff on the maternity wards are amazing. I had a couple stays in hospital before my son then arrived 6 weeks early, he then stayed in for 2 weeks and I have nothing but positive things to say, so please don’t be too worried x
My experience was not great . I had my baby boy 5 weeks ago …
@Tori I don’t think I want to look if I know this now 😬 my mum and sister almost died with their children and I’m already worrying myself thinking that’ll happen to me too
I didn’t know this! I had my first at Luton 4 weeks ago and had the best Experience but had a fast Labour. They check you every 4 hours but after 2 I was ready to push x
I’ve had both my babies at the L&D hospital without any problems
@Amy that's really reassuring thank you c
@Paulina oh no how comes?
@Elizabeth that's really scary 😟
@Carrera that's very reassuring!!
@Amy seems to be the common theme! Just worried about the statistics x
I had my little one 8 weeks ago and the delivery midwives (we ended up with two due to long labour) were fantastic! Supportive, listened to my every concern. Ended in an emergency section and even the staff involved there were fab! I wouldn’t worry too much 😊 Good luck x
I had my little one nearly 3 years ago now! Delivery ward was great, despite having to get her out quickly! They reacted fast and got her out safely. Was at home that night xx
Do not have your baby at the labour centre. It’s supposed to be a calm environment with minimal medical intervention and student nurses with the occasional senior doctor doing their patrols. I was there for 4 hours and the student nurses could not pick up the fact that my baby was getting starved of oxygen despite me having a contraction 2 minutes apart for 3 hours straight. Almost ended up with an emergency Caesarean. Still hate to think what May have happened to my baby boy. If you stick with L&D opt for the maternity ward where there are plenty of qualified doctors and senior staff around.

Delivery midwives we’re both excellent and super super comforting and helpful. That was the only highlight of the whole experience
I’ve had all 3 of my children at l&d and I live in Stevenage and will be having my 4th I haven’t had a bad experience yet midwives are absolutely lovely and caring there. Feel really supported by them.
I had my little boy there 9 months ago, and honestly, the staff were absolutely brilliant. They genuinely cared for me and my situation and I felt completely listened too. Everyone has their own experiences, I think it's always good to go with your gut. I heard so many bad things about L&D but something was pushing me more towards them than anywhere else and I'm so glad I did. X
@Sabbah sounds lovely!! Thank you x
@Lisa Shepherd that's really lucky!! Good to hear thank you c
@Sadia I don't have a choice unfortunately I have a high risk pregnancy so need to be consultant led!! That sounds really scary xx
@Sadia the staff seem to be really nice!
@Tia lovely to hear thank you xx
@Beth absolutely every experience will vary! Just want what's best for baby xx
I had the vest experience at l&d I had my baby in August last year, I ended up having an emergency c section due to little one having the cord wrapped around him but I received the best care, they do have a neonatal unit for little ones could that be bumping the statistics up as they deal with babies that are born very early?xx
@Tori my midwife was amazing! I requested no canula/needles and they followed every request. I got to 10cm pushed for 2 hours but he was stuck:( his heart rate went to 200bpm, they had people come in and explain to me everything that was going to happen and every step of the way. I was rushed to theatre, had a spinal block and forcep delivery. They honestly were amazing x
The stillbirth statistics they release every month are the total over the most recent 3 months. Not the amount per month. So the latest statistic of 10 (in the February statistic) is 10 still births across dec- feb. Meaning on average 3 per month for about 500 births. So that’s just slightly over the norm. Try not to worry, you really are in safe hands!
@Keely I did think that!! But then looked at stats with other hospitals with NICUs and they're lower x
@Carrera this sounds very much like my last birthing experience! I think I will just speak to my midwife and ask why perhaps they are a bit high xx
@Alex oh!!! I'll have another look I must have started spiralling 🤣 that's not too bad!! The ones that say 19 are still quite over the normal rate but they seem to be last year! X

@Alex aw yes I do understand what you're saying now!! A bit more reassuring!!
I had my baby 2 weeks ago in L&D and they were great. I was induced and baby’s heart rate kept dropping on my contractions as they were a bit strong, they didn’t take any risks and got me down to delivery. His heart rate disappeared from the monitor at one point and they hit the emergency alarm, the whole world came in the room and it was sorted very quickly, each person told me everything they were doing and why. I ended up in a c section because he got stuck but that was all fine too - I really couldn’t fault anyone before or during my delivery. Recovery was a bit shit - the ward was so busy they didn’t have space for us and I felt like we got forgotten about a bit. I do remember my NCT course leader mentioning the stillbirth stats being skewed due to the NICU.
as people have said above all the stats for luton are affected by the fact they have a NICU. luton takes high risk maternity patients from lots of other hospitals.
I had my little boy at L&D last June. I had a mixed experience. I had to go in to be induced however as i was contracting already on my own i didnt need to be induced but they kept me there to monitor. I had a bit of a bad experience with one of the nurses on induction ward. She tried to put canula in my hand ready for when i was to go down to delivery suite however she messed it up and caused me quite a bit of pain and then proceeded to tell another midwife that i had screamed and pulled my hand away causing her to not be able to do the canula which was completely untrue. My midwifes on delivery suite were really nice,i had two experienced midwifes and two students. The day i was due to be discharged i got kicked out of my bed on the ward and told they needed my bed for someone else. In their rush to kick me out they discharged me without filling out the paperwork. We got to the car in the carpark and the nurse came running out and we had to go back in
Had an awful experience there . I transferred my care at 35 weeks to another hospital.
@Tobi what happened with your care? Xx
@Emma sounds like a positive experience!
@Sinead I didn't know this!!
@Karen sounds like they're just quite understaffed
@Tobi oh no I'm sorry! Could I please have some more info xx
@Tori yes I’m quite happy with all the treatment I had there during my pregnancy.
I had my baby 9 months ago in L&D and staff was really helpful. Don’t worry everything will be fine and will go smooth x
Looking at the infographic someone posted further up, it looks like the statistics are for L&D and Beford hospital combined, so 10 over 3 months over 2 hospitals is less than 2 a month. I didn't have the best experience at L&D (back in Dec 2022) but they were horrendously short staffed, we even had a neonatal nurse looking after us at one point as there was no midwives available and my labour kept stalling. The staff are lovely though there's just not enough of them. Just make you or someone else is advocating for you. I ended up discharging myself as well as they kept me in to monitor post partum pre-eclampsia (blood clot & stroke risks) but then left me in a room at the end of a corridor without checking on me for 14 hours overnight. But even after all I'd go back there again if I have another baby. X
The staff at l and d were all great and nicu team as well
Oh no don’t say thattt 😩 I changed to Luton from Milton Keynes because I was told they were really good but that’s so high for my liking
