Any advice is welcome!

My baby has just turned 3 weeks. First two weeks were a dream until around a few days ago where he has been SCREAMING In agony with what can only really be his Bowels. He isn’t constipated to my knowledge as he is able to pass motion however the build up to the motion is really distressing for him and us as parents. Does anyone know how to settle any discomfort he may be in? Thanks x

Are his poos normal consistently? I was informed that they can do this because they get that urge to go but some babies haven't learnt how to relax the last anal sphincter (sorry tmi I know) so they are pushing and dealing with the discomfort but not actually allowing the poo to come by relaxing the correct muscles to do so. They grow out of though. Have you tried doing the bicycle movements and rotating his abdomen to give more movement?

He might not be in pain so don’t worry, at this age it’s really common for them to cry more so out of frustration as they don’t know which muscles to use to get the poop out! It’s called infant dyschezia! Another weird little wonder about babies - they don’t know how to poop! But if you think he is in pain then loads of baby massage will help him xx

@Dee they’re a normal yellow consistency, there has been more recently due to him feeding more, or wanting to feed more. I’ve tried the bicycle technique but it doesn’t calm him, I don’t know if it is constipation or not it’s just the screams are awful to listen to and see him go through ☹️ will keep a close eye on him x

@Sarah at this point who do I seek medical advice from? Stupid question perhaps.. my community midwives do not have great communication still waiting for someone to look at my infected wound after a phone call last week … 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m yet to register him at the gp too, this was my task tomorrow x

This happened to us when I called the doctor, they told us to help her “bear down” so gently push their knees into the stomach when they are trying to push the poo out and if that doesn’t work try a warm bath

Is he only getting breast milk or formula? If his poop is not hard, it’s not constipation. Did you introduce a different formula or baby food to him in the third week?

@Darlene hi, he is having cow and gate formula only and has had this since birth so nothing has changed in that sense. His poo is definitely not hard, so really don’t know what’s wrong with him in those moments ☹️

I wonder if he’s also getting gassy, but alot of the questions above sound helpful and insightful.

It could possibly be gas pain, my little guy has been having an awful time with that. They sell warm belly compresses for infants on Amazon (haven’t tried on my son yet) but they worked great on my daughter. The Frida Windi Gasspasser is also amazing. It was perfect for my daughter and works great for my 3 week old. There are also gas drops, but I’d ask your pediatrician first.

My LB has/had the same issue, started around 3 weeks x he’s now 4 weeks and 3 days and is doing much better! The act of pooping is a learned behaviour and babies need to figure it out on their own ☹️ it’s hard to watch knowing you can’t really help (my son had 1 really bad day where he cried constantly for hours) but then in the evening he had a huge blowout nappy and has been so much happier ever since and able to poop much easier x it’s called infant dyschezia and I’m so glad I’ve found a thread of other mums of babies going through the same thing - I honestly thought we were the only ones 🥰 x

Could it be colic? My baby had this and was so hard to go through because nothing really helps. But you could try gripe water

I understand how this can be , My baby had this from 2 weeks old and lasted for two months, it felt like forever and i certainly couldn’t stand seeing her in pain . She just turned 3 months now and she is completely free, sleeps well without tummy pains again. I was told its colic and I managed it with infacol, tummy exercises and more tummy time which helped her release gas more often and reduced the pain. Also try putting baby to sleep on the tummy , this was a hack I found out later on when the colic phase was almost over but to my suprise my baby loves that sleeping position till today . She could be asleep on her tummy for 4 /5 hours . Ps: she turns her neck independently and regularly in her sleep and I put her sleeping on her tummy only during the day when I can constantly monitor her to avoid her sleeping on her nose . You could try these out and I hope if works for you. All the best mama xoxo
