Overwhelmed by Weaning

Hi all! I'm a massive foodie and I've been so excited for my son to turn 6 months so we can start weaning However now it's here I feel very overwhelmed! I've got the How to Wean you Baby book, which is great, and I know that food is mainly just for exploration at this age. Can anyone relate?! I feel like every day I'm just putting off starting. I'd love to know what foods you started on!

Firstly I’d say that you can definitely start with just once per day (we’re almost a month in now and still only doing once per day), and if you need to miss the odd day it’s not a big deal! I blended (after steaming for some things obviously) a bunch of veg and fruit, froze them in ice cube trays and then kept in labelled zip locks in the freezer. Each morning I pull 1 or 2 out and mix together (ie parsnip and apple, raspberry and banana etc) - but only ever doing one new food at a time. Usually I add a bit of her milk (breast milk in our case) to it for fluids. Then you just need a little cup for water to start offering baby sips whilst they’re eating

Food wise we started with things like carrots, swede, apple, parsnip, peas, broccoli, pears, prunes, banana, avocado etc

We got the Ella’s kitchen weaning pack that was free and started with home puréed veg and then fruit - I got one of those silicone fruit feeder things too which was great at the start for my confidence! You got this mama x

I was feeling anxious and had decided to put it off to the weekend so my husband would be around too... Then on the Tuesday before she reached out and grabbed some banana from his hand and put it in her mouth! So she very much showed us it was time (she was showing all the official signs of readiness too). Apart from the unplanned banana, she then had steamed broccoli, courgette, aubergine, green beans, avocado, strawberries, raspberries, natural yoghurt (allergen), baby corn, potato (mashed), egg (omelette) in that order. We do BLW. It's been fine and fun!

Meant to add - Solid starts is a good app to explore - tells you how best to serve for different ages and lets you track your food and allergens etc x

I've literally only been using Purees...I really want my baby to start playing with food and exploring but I'm just so terrified I'm scared I'm holding him back 😔

I feel the same way- didn’t know where to start & super worried he’ll choke lol. I’ve kept it simple by just offering him a bowl at every meal time with some of what’s on my plate to play with. I will give him the unseasoned or raw version. Because he’s teething he’ll shove it all in the mouth to see if it feels good and I just watch carefully to make sure not choking hazards lol 🤦🏼‍♀️

I have a bit of a "traditional" approach to it, and I don't feel confident with BLW, so I am only doing purees and porridge. Carrots, peas, broccoli, squash, courgette and potatoes (I always add potatoe to any puree) and banana, pear and apple, at the moment. Started with one at a time and now mixing them up! I also give her porridge in the morning. We are doing 3 "meals" a day (porridge, veg puree, and fruit puree) but I am lucky that little one loves the spoon! Every baby is different, but they will all end up eating, so don't worry too much and enjoy the journey! 🙂 xx
