Early riser

My 6 month old baby has been waking up, ready for the day, between 5-6am pretty much every day for the past two weeks. We’ve tried an earlier bedtime, a later bedtime, adding more feeds in the evening, extending her wake windows, but nothing has worked. Any suggestions? Granted, we aren’t suuuper consistent with a strict bedtime because I tend to put her down based on when she wakes from her last nap, but she usually goes down somewhere between 7-8pm.

How old is she?

Following because same. Went down at 9, still up between 5-6. Went down at 7, same. My baby is 13 weeks, how old is yours?

@Catherine 6 months

@Kate she’s 6 months! At 13 weeks maybe her sleep isn’t regulated yet, there’s still hope for you 😂

Sameeeeee

We don’t let her take naps past 7:30 and have her in bed by 9pm and I’m getting her up for the day at 7:30am and 6:30am because I have to go to work Oh but on weekends when I don’t have to work she likes to wake me up and doesn’t want to sleep in She’s a turd She’s 8 months Monday

As annoying as it is, early wake ups are super normal for babies. 5am+ is kinda normal. A few things you could try: - block out blinds, make sure there’s no sunrise poking through at all - white noise to block out local cars. As soon as my baby heard the neighbour leave for work (he left super early) he would wake - make sure she’s not cold, temp drops off a lot in the early hours of the morning, and it can wake them. Even a few degrees difference is noticeable to them. - making bed time later for nights in a row until it’s much later and baby is tired eventually. It takes at least 4 nights of a much later bed time for my boy to sleep a bit later. For us; we had to decide if we wanted a child that went to bed at 7:30-8:00 and got up at 5:30/6:00 or if we wanted him until 9pm - 7am. He’s 3.5 now and sleeps 7:30-6:30 ish. Once they get older and drop naps night time sleep gets longer - they have a quota in 24 hours they fill for my boy since a young baby it was always 11 hours in 24

(Part 2) so if he sleep 4 hours naps in the day, he would only sleep 7 hours at night. Reducing naps was the best thing for us.

@Ellen interesting, I’ve heard and read so many different things. Like some sleep experts say an earlier bedtime usually resolves the early morning waking. It’s really hard to limit daytime sleep for my baby because she gets tired pretty quick. Ive been trying to keep her awake for 2.5 hours between naps but she starts getting grumpy around the 1.5-2 hour mark

@Ariel it’s honestly so hard and there’s so much conflicting advice. One thing works for one baby and not the next. I hope you can find a solution soon!

I wanted to update you all because after weeks of 5-5:30am wake ups, this morning my baby slept till about 7:15! We started thinking that maybe it didn’t have so much to do with her bedtime and more to do with what time she does her middle-of-the-night feed. Lately she’s been waking up around 1-2am for a feed, but she used to go a lot longer (waking up between 3-5 for a feed). So we’re trying a few things: making sure she’s super full before bed, trying to get her to go back to sleep without a feed if she wakes up before 3am, and I’m also working on night weaning by shortening the feeding session in the night. It seems to be working! If anyone else is struggling, I hope this is helpful.
