Help!

I need some tips/help with my son; he's almost 18months old and will shove whole ass crackers in his mouth with no consequence and gets super upset and starts crying if I tell him that he can choke and hurt himself and that he needs to take smaller bites. I straight up gave him teddy grahams and some banana cookies in small pieces and he proceeds to shove about 5 things in his mouth at once and I don't know how to get him to stop or eat safer.

My son does the same thing 😭

My almost 18 month old does the SAME THING! The only thing I changed or felt that I could do is give whatever it is to him in smaller portions. I didn’t trust putting multiple crackers or pieces of things in front of him at once. One day he just randomly shocked me by starting to take bites. He had a whole ritz cracker in his hand & just took bites until it was gone. I noticed it was when his back teeth started coming in. I guess he felt like he could actually take his time to chew using those new teeth? Idk. I just say be patient with him.

I’d give him a couple at a time? I know you are in the self eating phase, but until he has more teeth to chew, I’d just give him less at a time. Like you said, you don’t want him choking and he isn’t old enough to self-regulate.

Also, he just recently started grabbing one thing at a time too.. taking his time to eat. So I definitely say don’t stress yourself out too bad about it. Just limit his availability to the foods & keep a look out for those back teeth coming in. He will one day surprise you!

My son does the same. I give him small portions and also try to show him how to take small bites by modeling and eating the same thing with him. I also over exaggerate the small bites and chewing to really make my point lol he usually mimics me…helpful in this situation but I better watch out 😂

Let him do it, he's learning! Have a water cup at the ready and no unsupervised crackers. Tell him to "spit out" when he has too much in his mouth to possibly swallow and model taking big vs. small bites. If it is bothering you, start him with a fresh cracker and ask if he likes to chomp like a dinosaur ("CHOMP!") or nibble like a mouse. Show him how to snap the crackers in half first, and emphasize it with a big "SNAP!" The sillier you make it, the more he will like it, and the better it will sink in. Remind yourself we all had to learn how much comfortably fits in our mouth at some point. It may not be pretty but it's part of the process. Keep a watchful eye and this too shall pass.

My daughter does the same thing.

My son does the same thing with certain foods! Sometimes I'll catch it before it happens and I'll grab the piece of food before it's all the way in his mouth and just hold it until he takes that first bite. And normally that helps. I also only give him a few pieces of whatever food at a time because he does have the tendency to put more in his mouth if there's more food in front of him.

My daughter does this too, I just have to offer her food one piece/bite at a time.
