Breastmilk/formula

My daughter isn't gaining enough weight! She's 4 months and in the 10th percentile for weight at 12.5 pounds. She is exclusively on Breastmilk but her pediatrician said we should start offering a few oz of formula a day to up her caloric intake. I don't think she will drink formula by itself as she is sensitive to tastes. How do I mix it with Breastmilk? Do I make the formula normally with water, then mix with the Breastmilk or do I mix the formula powder with my Breastmilk???

You mix about a half a scoop of the powder in with the breast milk to add extra calories. (What my pediatrician recommended)

I absolutely disagree with formula. I used it with my first two and with my third one day my husband brought almond milk nd I tasted it nd it tasted like my breast milk. I drunk my breast milk I like to know what my body produce. But I mixed almond milk with water like u would formula one oz of milk to two oz of water for a 3oz bottle so basically a one to two ratio. my daughter was huge. Never went back to formula not only is plain sweet almond milk way cheaper but to me seem healthier. I recommend it to others but it’s up to u what h do best but I never knew it was an option until I tried it. My kid’s doctor didn’t notice the difference in health just kept telling me she look and sound great and she never was constipated. My boys with formula had the worst constipation nd hearing them cry to poop huge solid rocks was truly heartbreaking

Make formula as instructed then add breastmilk

@Mya I was trying to avoid formula, my son was formula fed and totally fine but I was excited to be able to breastfeed. From my knowledge I don't think almond milk is safe for a 4 month baby and I personally would not be comfortable giving her that

@Mya never thought about this but I’d definitely give a go, because my baby does not like formula he only wants breast milk and I’ve been exclusively breastfeeding and can’t pump to save my life 😂😂 I have no pump routine or even know how to create one. I need more tips on upping my supply, I’ve tried fenugreek and body armor, and I’ve noticed my supply did increase with body armor so I’m gonna have to stock up

@Regina what about goat milk?

@Joni I know they make a goat milk formula but I won't give her any type of milk straight you can get from a carton. From my research I'm only comfortable with formula and my Breastmilk. I just need to know how to mix the 2 so that she will take the formula

I combo fed my little guy because he was on the low end of weight just with my milk and he loves it! We are now fully on formula because he enjoys it more and his happiness is where my heart lies! I would make 2oz of formula the way the table says to (follow whatever brand you choose) and then added however many oz of breastmilk you'd like! Example: I'd make 2oz of formula and add 3oz of BM to make it a total of 5 oz :)

If you want to try goat milk formula, Jovie and Bubs are highly rated brands. Bubs you can get off of Amazon! There are also ways to increase the calories in your own breastmilk. Eating high protein and a lot of healthy fats helps. Also, feeding or pumping more frequently to have more hindmilk than foremilk at each feeding :)

@Lexie body amor works because it hydrates you. If you’re not properly hydrated, then your supply takes a huge dip! You gotta drink a TON to increase supply! Any electrolyte drink will work or just drinking a ton of water and also eating a lot. :)

@Kassia I'm an over producer with over 4k oz of frozen breast milk I just don't have enough calories in in apparently 🥲

@Regina then that’s your problem! Pump/express before feeding OR you can separate your breast milk to feed the hindmilk! :) use the foremilk for baths, cradle cap, etc If you do this, then your baby will be eating more calories Overproducers have a lot of foremilk that the baby gets full of when feeding directly from the breast. It is the thin milk:)
