Feeding routine/confused

Hi, Got my LB weight done today and I asked how much should he be eating. The health visitor was like oh he should definitely be having 3 meals a day and less bottles. I’m just confused because I’m sure food before one is just for fun? And he has put on weight he has even gone up on his chart. He is 8months but he has bad reflux so I have only been giving him lunch at the moment and he is still bringing some of that back up. I explained this to her and she was like oh yeah just give him more food that will stop the reflux. Anyway my question is are we ment to do bottle first then breakfast or the other way round? Thanks

That sounds so unhelpful. Go with your gut, if he is healthy then you know him best!

Usually it’s bottle first with a break than food until one and then switch it around after one. But go with your instincts.

Around that age I was doing bottle first and then breakfast an hour later. He’s just turned one now and it’s only recently that I’ve stopped the bottle in the morning because he was starting to then refuse breakfast. With regards to being on 3 meals a day, I would just do it slowly. Add in another meal and just look at it as giving more time to practice. With my first, I followed the “how to wean your baby” book and we were on 3 meals by 8 months. But my second just hated food so he has been a lot slower. All babies are different, just go at your own pace 😁

The whole “food before one is just for fun” is a bit of a myth as after 6 months milk alone doesn’t meet all of babies nutritional requirements (such as iron). Having said that, they should still be drinking a fair amount of milk! My daughter is 7.5 months and still only having breakfast & dinner at the moment. She is drinking less formula but only about 150-200mls less than before in a 24 hour period. We give her bottle first & then her meal about an hour later x

We’ve just turned 9 months but have been the same since 6.5/7 months. He wakes up and has porridge first, then 30-45 mins later has a bottle. Then has lunch then 45-60 mins later bottle. Then dinner and then his bottle about 45 mins later. This has always worked for us he’s a really good Eater. He has 7oz bottles so has around 21oz a day x

I slowly introduced 3 meals as I found it impossible to do bottles and three meals at 6 months. So I started introducing breakfast first at 6 months, 7 months added lunch, 8 months added tea. But I also took bottles away so by 10 months we only had one bottle before bed. Changed to cows milk before bed when he turned 1 then at 14 months we got rid of bottles and milk altogether. It is hard but go with your gut. And if you see baby enjoying a certain meal/meal time then remove that bottle and continue the new routine xx

Milk should be primary source of nutrition and they should be having still 21oz+ a day still. But as they move towards 1 year they may naturally drop a milk feed or two as their solids increase. My 8m old is still on 30oz milk a day and 1-2 solid meals x

I was confused too and bit unsure of what to follow. I know on the NHS website it says from 7-9months approx 600ml of milk is required. 10-12months around 400ml. So long as baby is having 3 balanced meals a day. But then else where you read milk should be their main nutritian until 1 so not to worry so much about 3 meals a day. But also by 12 months they should be having 3 meals a day and from 6-12 months they should be working towards that but then "food before 1 is just for fun" Im confused on what to follow...

Bottle first at this age. Maybe introduce another snack somewhere in the day and see how he gets on. There’s honestly no rush. He will likely cut out a bottle himself as the food content increases. (I work in health visiting)
