How does antidepressants (Sertraline) actually make you feel?

Have been prescribed sertraline for depression. I’m 12 week postpartum. Think I’ve always suffered with depression but due having a newborn and no childcare I’m unable to consistently do the things that use to help (work, gym, hiking). I’m wondering how it will actually make me feel. I just feel very hopeless and detached. Will it just get rid of that or just dampen the feeling.

I use to take it back when I was like 19/20 I don’t remember the dosage though. It made me feel super quiet like I would just be zoned out. It’s like I was there but not there lol does that make sense? 😅

It helps make me feel capable of being present in the moment without that hopeless, detached anxiety. It doesn't make me feel anything per se, but being free of the post partum anxiety that was suffocating me feels freeing. I'll admit I was resistant to the idea of medication initially, but my spouse and a trusted doctor convinced me to give it a try. I'm unmedicated for another disorder, so like you I had a lot of go to coping mechanisms that just weren't enough or realistic while taking care of a newborn. I wish I had tried it sooner with my first instead of being stubborn. With my second, I started on it again the first night after she was born and the difference in my post partum experiences was remarkable. It can take a little bit of time for it to start working, I usually start to feel a difference in a week or two.

I’ve been taking it for a bit and at first I didn’t like it because it kinda made me feel very detached from emotions but now it has definitely helped me with the thoughts and some anxiety, I take 50mg and it has helped me get back to doing things I enjoy.

I've been on it for years and it's been essential to my wellbeing. It works for some, so talk to your doctor about your feelings.

I started taking it a couple weeks ago and I don't feel detached but I do feel less worried and depressed. I'm able to be more present and enjoy my baby.

Thanks everyone, it’s my first time taking medication and I’m a bit worried. So far my doctor just says it will help me not feel so low but can’t answer how I’ll actually feel.

They were no good for me I couldn’t sleep with them

I was on 100mg for 3 years got on well with them came off them a month ago as felt I was doing better but I’m back on them again x

I used to take it for anxiety, struggled to sleep at first but then that went away and I felt okay on it. Just felt it was easier to be myself, however I gained A LOT of weight on it, which was counterproductive as I used to suffer from an eating disorder and seeing myself gaining all this weight just brought my anxiety back, so I stopped taking it.

@Marissa how bad were your night sweats? I was waking up wet with sweat to the point where I stopped taking it. Now I'm wondering if I should have tried longer.

@Clarlie oh my gosh I just started and was I keep waking up so hot and sweaty!

@Courtney yeah, I couldn't handle it. I'm kind of regretting stopping but it was actually making nights horrible for me.
