Sun cream

Is anyone else using sun cream on there babies? I’m hearing conflicting things. Some are saying not before 6 months? But then I don’t want my baby to burn (not that he’s in the sun for long) also if you do use sun cream what sun cream do you recommend?

They say you can’t use suncream before 6 months, but I believe it’s to make you keep them in the shade. I’m going abroad with my baby next month (she’ll be 11-12 weeks) and i’ll be using suntan lotion just because it’ll be impossible to keep her 100% protected. I’m just using Aldi’s kids factor 50. Don’t be tempted into the expensive brands just look for a good star rating for UVA/UVB x

@Michelle what app is that you’re using?

Id rather suncream than a burnt baby, even though they have sensitive skin it would be so much worse to burn I think

@Nancy Yuka 😊

They do suncream specifically for babies. Child's farm is an example. There are loads in boots at this time of year. I put baby safe suncream on our LO every time we went outside from being 1 month old, including in his hair. Even in the shade just in case. It also acts as a really good moisturiser xx

I’m going abroad with my baby next week and she will be 7 weeks. I will be using sun cream on her, I’ve checked with my health visitor and she said it was absolutely fine just to patch test and get one for babies, 100% better than a burnt baby x

Babies skin is super absorptive, so be careful not to use a chemical sunscreen. Also, I heard that it's generally not recommended to put sunscreen on babies less than 6 months because they shouldn't be out in direct sunlight that much anyway. Not sure how much truth to that there was.

I waited till after 6months to use sunscreen, to minimize his chemical exposure. We always tried to stay in the shade and had a sunshade for the beach etc. and then used a wide brimmed hat to shade face and ears and neck, and light coloured long sleeve shirts. The stroller had a shade on it too that did most of the work when we were out before 6 months

We use the sun cream @Michelle has recommended but never before 6 months. There are so so many harmful chemicals in lots of the brands (even well known brands that you’d think were very good!) - please look into whats in them before buying. I second the Yuka app it’s really good for making informed choices x

So they recommend not suncream because babies prior to 6mo can’t control their body temps. So no suncream means your not in the sun, and your baby can’t overheat. After 6mo they can regulate a little better and can be in the sun longer. I use cerave for my boy. Adult kind but his pediatrician approved it. 🫶🏻

Your baby must 100% not be in the sun and must be kept in the shade. We travelled extensively from 3mths (after jabs!) and used suncream as I felt that was better than burnt baby! But only as a back up. Never on face just on exposed legs, arms and feet. Not on hands in case licked off. Babies don’t want to be in the sun and find it hard to regulate their body temp. Their eyes are extremely sensitive as well. You can get baby sunglasses. Nivea kids factor 50.

@Michelle I use this app it’s great!x

Just to add to what @Yasmin said, many brands that I THOUGHT would be good and that kept coming up when Google searching for baby safe sunscreens actually scored very badly on the app, I was surprised.
