He could go through the day without it (didn’t do too well with bottles of expressed milk) and made up for it by feeding more when I got home/overnight/before I went to work. I pumped mainly for comfort, and to give nursery some expressed milk for him
Yes pumping, I think there's technically a legal obligation for your place of work to provide a private space for you to pump that isn't the toilet. I was lucky as I work for quite a big company there were some facilities. But basically it sucks

I sat in a cupboard pumped three times a day so my little boy had enough milk for the next day. It's tough but doable with the right boss.
