Living in FL honest reviews!

My husband and I are seriously considering moving to Florida to be closer to family(more consistent help with my son) and for warmer weather. I’m looking for honest reviews about raising kids in Orlando area, best towns to live in, things to look out for, anything helps! We’ve been hearing a lot of good things about lake mary/sanford area specifically but also considered Ocala as there seems to be alot of development. Side note we are not political at all but are very open minded/accepting people who have lived in blue states our entire lives. I see alot of red vs. blue arguments over FL areas so I thought that note might be important lol

Don’t move to Orlando. Extremely overcrowded, high housing prices, traffic sucks. Some outer areas are nice like Deltona, Sanford, Ovideo are north east of Orlando and places out west like Claremont or minneola with newer developments

Hello, I live right in the city and I will say it’s a bit overwhelming and overcrowded. A lot of nightlife/homeless/ & general people. Traffic is horrible. It’s extremely hot here during summer. I love Florida but I’m looking to move to Cocoa Beach area or west coast side - St Petersburg. Different vibes and people. Calmer … not so much ruckus … and cost of living is through the roof. Ocala is nice but it’s becoming a big town with lots of development. Check out beachside.

@Stasha We have been seeing some nice looking housing options in Sanford area! This is a great help thank you!!

@Raechel Thank you sm for the help!! We are definitely going to stay outside the city a bit after seeing some comments! Unfortunately the west coast is a bit too far from our family and I need the babysitting help😫😫 but I have heard that about the west!!

@Jenna look anywhere from 30min-1hr outside Orlando itself. You’ll find nice areas, decent housing prices and better community. For the most part the major highways or toll roads can shorten the commute to Orlando

I moved to Florida over 2 years ago I hate it .. most people I meet don’t like it here either. Florida is nice for vacation not living. If you have facebook join this group called moving out of Florida you will see all the cons here

I’ve lived in Florida two separate times. Hated it both times, after the first time I said I would never live there again, but my husband and I moved to be closer to family about 6 months after my son was born. We lived in Orlando, which also sucked lol. As others have said it’s over crowded. It never felt that safe to me, the schools didn’t seem up to par from what I’m used to and it just wasn’t a place I wanted to raise my son personally. I had a difficult time finding good healthcare for me or my son and since it’s so overcrowded and there’s a lack of healthcare workers new patient wait times were crazy. About a year after we moved there we decided it was enough and to go somewhere with better opportunity and where my husband (on one income now) would be making more doing the same thing. We moved to MN which is where I grew up. I share the sentiment that Florida is great for vacation not for living. I personally hope to never have to move back there again!

Idk if it’s relevant but I’m a Florida born native, specifically Orlando, lived here my whole life and I hate it 😅 planning to move in a couple years, only reason we’d stay is my husband’s job and all our family lives here

Moved here from NY in 2020, had my baby in 2023. Personally what I most is the kind of people since people can be two faced here. Sanford might be a better fit as there’s a good mix of people and better priced, Ocala is very red so if that’s important I’d stay away. If you like Disney and are planning on getting annual passes Davenport and St Cloud can be a good option for the price

I'm in Winter Springs (neighboring county to Orlando area) and while I love the area, the cost of living are out of control while the pay remains low. Orange County is hit or miss and some areas are downright dangerous. Volusia is cheaper but more rural and redneck TBH.

@Vanessa This is REALLY great info!!! Thank you!

@Bekah Oooof….definitely a little worried with the healthcare comment..Wondering if you have any experience//thoughts on healthcare/schools more outside of the city? From the looks of it we are DEFINITELY staying out of the city but want to stay within driving distance of the villages(where my grandparent help is!!!!) Coming from chicago and LA we are used to living in a bit rougher areas and I know with big cities it’s all about which area your in

Personally best healthcare is Orlando health and advent health is hit or miss so depends on level of care you need/ what diseases you’re managing

@Cristan We’ve had a few people recommend winter springs area…..we are coming from CA so are used to higher cost of living and we work remotely. Wondering if you have any thoughts about the school system in your area? Is it worth the cost of living in your opinion?

@Jenna Florida schools are overall not great lol, esp. compared to CA. But almost all of Seminole county has good schools (aside from a few in Sanford), particularly Winter Springs, Oviedo and Lake Mary. Florida also offers a scholarship to all kids for a discount at a private school of your choice, as long as you can transport them there. So if you can afford it, you wouldn't regret moving to Winter Springs or Oviedo which is right next door :)

@Jenna You’re welcome!! I totally understand being close to family!! What area is your family in? My mom is 45mins away from me .. I feel like it’s to far from me! lol.

@Jenna unfortunately I don’t know much about outside of the city. My MIL is an RN in leeseburg and I know she feels overworked all the time because there’s so many patients per provider, and she says there’s long wait times for things, but I think she works more with older patients. I used to live in Eustis my first time around but I didn’t have much experience with the healthcare at that time. In Orlando I was not happy with my pediatrician that at about 9 months my son had hand foot and mouth and they disregarded my concern to his really high fever that wasn’t coming down with medication(the urgent care I took him too also misdiagnosed him with an ear infection) and he ended up needing to be hospitalized due to starting to become dehydrated because he didn’t want to drink since he had sores on his throat. He was diagnosed properly at the hospital

@Raechel They’re in the Villages which I know we couldn’t live in due to age restrictions but we’re looking for an area with younger families within in an hour/easy driving distance from them

I just moved to Oviedo and while I have never been a fan of living in FL specifically central florida, Oviedo has been great. Everything near by, super family friendly and oriented, safe neighborhoods, good schools, manageable traffic. Close to tolls for quick access to Orlando city center.
