Milk

My son is 2 years old and we recently visited the dentist. They informed me him drinking milk is causing issues with teeth. It already took forever for him to stop breastfeeding any advice? He only drinks milk To sleep

I really think that’s interesting because they want/ed us to believe that milk is so good for your bones and your teeth. I was advised to do water only at night or brush after they drink milk.

You need to either brush after giving the milk or just give water for nap & bedtime.

My guess is just to stop giving milk at night, just water. Mine told me to brush every night before bed and nothing but water after brushing

We only do milk for mornings. We stopped the “before bedtime milk” a few months ago and it’s been going great. Make sure you are brushing his teeth well before bed. Even without him having a bottle, he should still be getting his teeth brushed before bed. We made that a part of my daughter’s night time routine when she was little so she could get used to it. It’s not too late to start. Just be consistent. 😁

@Nakayla right I was shocked too

@Erin daycare doesn’t give him milk just water and sometimes apple juice. So issue is nighttime

@Esteffania I’ll try start brushing after he falls asleep I just feel bad he crying in the middle night. Reminds me when I stopped breastfeeding it took my mom to take him for a week to stop it

@Brianna brushing his teeth while asleep isn’t that helpful. He needs to be awake to know why you are doing it and so he is aware that it needs to be a part of his nightly routine. You won’t be able to get away with doing it while he sleeps in the near future so it’s best to teach him about brushing his teeth now. My daughter hated it at first but I would bribe her with her favorite book, Or a sticker, or something she loved. Also, I’m the one that does it for her because If I let her do it, she barely does a good job. But at least she knows that it needs to be done and let’s me do it. and If you don’t take away the night time bottle, just make sure he doesn’t go to bed with it. That’s super bad for their teeth at night. My daughter would drink hers in our living room and then when done, we would brush her teeth, use the potty and then bed. The way we took it away was by reducing the amount of milk. Instead of 8 oz, we did 6 one day. And then 4. Hopefully this is all helpful!

Surely apple juice at daycare is more of an issue than the milk at night? I personally wouldn’t worry at this age, by the time he gets his adult teeth he won’t be having milk before bed. So long as you teach him to brush his teeth and don’t get him hooked on sugary treats then what’s the real harm? My MIL is always going on about my nephew having breast milk at 2 and how that’s bad for his teeth, then she’s insisting on buying him ice cream at every opportunity 😂

I’d get nursery to stop the apple juice, that is going to be much more harmful than milk. Also, what is he drinking milk out of? At this age it should be a cup not a baby bottle. I agree with brushing teeth after the milk but before he goes to sleep so he’s aware of what’s happening.

We still do milk before bed. Brushing teeth is still a struggle too. I need to make a dentist appointment.

@Lisa you are wrong because they aren’t likely giving the juice before naptime and milk causes something called milk rot if left on the teeth while baby sleeps. Also, you are VERY wrong about it not mattering at this age because if his teeth get cavities or worse rot it does affect the grown up teeth that he will get later in life. Mom of 3 and this is all info I have learned over the almost 13yrs of being a mom.

@N 💞 he drinks out of a sippy cup now. Didn’t really take any bottles after 1

@Erin milk is the second best choice of drink to protect teeth, it is full of calcium which strengthens bones and teeth. Fruit juice is acidic, full of sugar and can cause tooth decay. So actually Lisa is not wrong in the slightest. Giving a child of 2 years old apple juice is stupidity.

@N 💞 lol, you think you know so much but…milk overnight is BAD for teeth…ask any pediatrician and dentist ;) Also, apple juice is good for kids and it’s standard practice at daycares to give juice, water and usually milk (at 1-2yrs)…I used to work for a daycare.

@Erin anything overnight is BAD for teeth.. that’s just common sense. As is not giving fruit juice to an infant. I couldn’t care less what job you did or how many kids you’ve got.
