elective rules

hey, i know there’s a few rules for an elective section like no false nails, no make up, no shaving a week before etc. i was wondering if 1. someone could tell me the rules they were given but 2. my pre op is 48 hours before my section, i’ve received nothing in regards to any rules i’ve just been told to go to the preop at the time. so unless ive googled (which i have but they don’t know) how would i know to stop shaving a week before the surgery?? and then say ive had my nails done, am i just expected to be told to get them off at my preop 2 days beforehand? my preop is on a saturday as well so its not like sunday can be used for anything just feeling a bit unprepared in regards to info!

When I had mine I had false nails on they didn’t say anything. Make up I don’t think that’s even a rule lol 😂 they just said to me that it’s jewellery that you can’t wear. If you have nose piercing they will cover it up with tape etc. as for shaving I was never told not to as they had to shave me when I had my c section. This is in the UK though if you are based here. Xx

When you booked your c section they should of advised what will happen on the day of the pre op.... The rules are no jewellery, no false nails... No shaving 7 days before... My pre op is also on a Saturday and it was ill be my 4th section.. So you already know the rules so just don't have any nails popped on or shave in the 7 days before xx

@Charlotte I'm also in the UK and they say no shaving in the 7 days before. Has it can cause infection with an ingrown hair ect xx

I only of no jewellery

I don’t know where you are but I’m uk & i wore fake tan, make up, biab nails & was allowed to shave up to 24 hours before my section. Is there a number where you can phone them to check it all? Or can you phone your midwife to ask cause Google is a pain & gives you conflicting info. Also good luck with everything & hope all goes well ❤️xx

I was only told no jewellery, I had a wax 6 days before my section and nothing was mentioned about nails.

I was told no jewellery, no false nails or nail polish, no shaving, no makeup, no perfumes. Hair should be tied back. Shower the day of the C-section and don't use any lotions or anything on the skin. No eating from 11pm the night before. I was allowed to drink but only water. Stomach medication to be taken night before and then 7am in the morning. Good luck 🥰 x

I got told to shave the morning of and I was allowed to wear makeup, I also wore fake tan. My rules were no nail polish on fingers or toes, so they can see your nails in case you lose oxygen, also no jewerally

I have my pre op 2 days before, UK too, so I’m just going off what they told me last time, no jewellery and shower on the day rather than night before that was literally it. I had bio sculpture nails on and lashes as I always had and they weren’t mentioned once. I used hair removal cream the weekend before and again they didn’t say anything but did shave over it a little too. I can only presume if they were super strict on these things then they would ensure you’re told well in advance as they wouldn’t expect anyone to rely on Google or others experience as the best guidance (of course it is handy!)

I shaved the day before, didn’t wear make up but this isn’t a rule, they say not to have nails on but a lot do and it’s never an issue. It varies, so just ask at your appointment/they’ll give all the information then.

I’m booked for my third section and never had those rules, I think they would just be advice/guidance from individual hospitals to what they prefer, people have emergency sections every day without any of those rules being applied

@Hayley well emergency is completely different really, usually natural labour is tried before this happened but a planned can be more planned, the main ones are no jewellery and don't shave 7days and under before hand they will do it for you if it's needed due to infection occurring through ingrown hairs ect xx

I haven’t heard of these rules? Had my elective section in January with my nails all done and I had shaved as I knew I wouldn’t be able to after. I only had 1 rule given to me and that was to take out all my piercings.

thank you everyone - the “rules” are from the elective csection NHS website, so i did think they were universal rules. I know that with my emergency c section i had shaved the day of my induction and did have tan and lashes on, obviously it wasn’t planned so they can’t just say no because i had these done. I’ll just wait and see what they say at preop :)

I had biab done and my lashes on 😅 and my ear jewellery that I couldn’t remove was just covered with tape x

You will be told eating rules and a to sickness at the pre op. Just no nail varnish or fake nails. Make up is fine - just had my third section and wore lashes this time round 😉

Oh and no piercings In!

I had used hair removal cream the day before thankfully, had gels on my nails and a face of makeup (as id just been at work). I also had my engagement ring on, my surgeon had no issues and told me I could wear it in theatre. At my pre op I was told nails were fine, only crappy tech cannot handle it. You are monitored in about 10 different ways nowadays, just leave your toes bare xx

I personally wouldn't wear makeup up anyway as they may male you remove it. Fake nails they can find it hard to get accurate readings from your fingers when reading your sats. You seem to know a most of the rules

I had gel nails (not long) make up on and I shaved myself the morning before mine haha (the pre op document said I could shave myself if I preferred to)😅 The nails are only an issue if they’re too long for the little clip on your finger The one thing I forgot about was jewellery- I had to take all my rings, necklaces, bracelets etc off and they had to tape a couple of my piercings in my ears and nose which I couldn’t take out (made me look super attractive 😂) I had to take omeprazole the night before and the morning of but I was already taking them anyway I was on the afternoon list so had to stop eating at 6:00 and could only drink water from 11:00
