Incompetent cervix

Has anyone on here been told they have an incompetent cervix? Did you manage to go full term? I had a pre term Birth at 24 weeks and am pregnant again, but they have said they will be doing cervical scanning on me to check my cervix during this pregnancy.

I'm not familiar with the term (I'm not in the US), but I have been told something similar. I needed a lot of procedures after a miscarriage. My healthy baby was born with 28+6 weeks and the only explanation they could give me was that my cervix might be "weaker" due to the procedures. If I want to try for a second baby, that recommend that I have a type of stitch to prevent premature labor.

Hello , so I'm also in the uk 16yrs ago I had my eldest at 40wks no complications. 2yrs ago I had my son at 24wks as my waters broke .... at 22wks....nobody knows why....he's grand he's 2yrs old now. Last year I fell pregnant and i was monitored weekly at the premature clinic and at 22wks my cervix was opening... so literally 2days later I had a cervical stitch placed and carried on being monitored each week and had it removed at 37wks and gave birth at 39wks 💓 I hope that helps 💓

@Elle (i can't see waves) aww that’s really promising thank you. I lost my girl at 24+4 as a result of premature labour. They have said in this pregnancy they are not sure yet whether I have a weak cervix until I’m further along but hopefully with being closely monitored they can keep an eye on it. They have mentioned progesterone pessaries so I will be starting those at 16 weeks! Thanks for the info 💓

@Elle (i can't see waves) can I ask what it was like having the stitch? Was it a simple procedure and was there bed rest involved after? X

This happened to my sister in law. First pregnancy she went to labor at 20 weeks and at the time they never found out why. She got pregnant again 6 months later and around 18 weeks found out she has an incompetent cervix… in her case it was really bad and they said she would give birth anytime again but thank goodness she went full term and had my nephew 2 months ago at 38 weeks

She did have a few procedures done and bed rest

Hiya , So I had an epidural and I was in theatre about 10mins if that,,, I did stay overnight as I still felt numb , other than that all went well , when I had it removed I had the option of gas and air ,,, however it was so quick I didn't need any pain relief, they just ussed a speculum to open my lady garden 😅😅 couple snips and it was out , so simple x

I had incompetent cervix found at my 20-week scan. My cervix was only 1.3cm. I had a cerclage placed the next day (spinal block, didn’t feel a thing, went home same day) and was also placed on restricted activity. No lifting more than 10lbs, walking more than 1 mile, no sex, no elevated heart rate. I had preterm premature rupture of membranes at 34+2 and delivered our son at 34+4. My waters broke when I was at work not doing anything strenuous at all. Son is now 21 months.

My sister in law lives in Brazil and her cervix was less than 1cm.. her obgyn said she didn’t understand how my SIL was not having any contractions and that her cervix should be above 2.5 cms My SIL had a cerclage done and in a week after her cervix was still extremely low even with the cerclage and bed rest, one doctor from the hospital said he could try something else. He suggested a vaginal pessary, she had the device inserted and went back home. She decided to do bed rest even tho doctors said no need. A week after the vaginal pessary insertion she returned to her obgyn and for her surprise her cervix went up and it was measuring 2.5 cms She was on bed rest until 35 weeks, on week 36 the doctors removed the vaginal pessary and removed the stitches. She had her sweet baby boy at exactly 38 weeks and her labor was so fast she didn’t even have time to get the epidural. I hope this gives you hope, she had a severe case of incompetent cervix and managed to go full term

I'd ask about having progesterone pesseries, I had two miscarriages and a loss at 21 weeks, when I fell pregnant again I was put straight on pesseries (you insert one a day vaginally ) and then had a cerclage placed at 15 weeks unfortunately my waters started leaking at 25 weeks 5 days so they had to remove the cerclage to prevent infection I gave birth the following day, after a long hospital day my little boy is now 14 months and doing amazing! Usually the stitch would stay in until 36 weeks I just didn't make it that far! Xx

@Lacey bless you! Yes they have said they are going to start the pessaries on week 16 so keeping everything crossed. So glad your little one is thriving thankfully 🙏 xx

That's good news, hope all goes well for you!🥰 it's so scary being pregnant again after a loss so any concerns get yourself seen straight away!! Thank you ☺️ xxx
