Bf with nipple shields

Lately my LO (11 weeks) has gotten really frustrated when breastfeeding. We use nipple shields at every feed since the beginning due to latching issues but lately I’ve noticed that the shield is getting more and more in the way. He would jump on and off it and knock it off each time. He then gets frustrated and as do I. Really keen to wean him off the nipple shield but he cries and gets frustrated each time I try without the shield but then with the shield he just knocks it off. Only position where it doesn’t get knocked off so easily is if I literally dangle my breasts into his mouth. Anyone else had this issue and have it resolved? Really starting to get to me and I also worry about his milk intake so never know how much to top him up.

Hi, i had this same issue, my daughter was born premature so I had to pump and bottle feed her for first 5 weeks as her latch hadn’t developed and she was so small. Then I went onto nipple shields as it was the next step then to get her off the nipple shield I would start feeding and then half way through take it off eventually after about 2 weeks of that she got use to it. But she can still be fussy at times with my right boob for some reason same what you say, lot of fustration, ends up crying which makes it worse, keeps latching and unlatching she seems best on my right boob first thing in the morning I find when they are calm in bed. But you will get there as annoying as it is just take the nipple shield off and on during the feed snd hopefully they will get the hang of it :). Best of luck

Ps i would try medela nipple shields i found they stayed on best and easy put on and are and reusable

@Laura thank you. We tried the Medela ones recently and he didn’t know how to suck those at all. We’ve been using the mam ones all this time and somehow the medela ones looked more slippery for him and he wasn’t able to latch
