Speaking!

How many words is your 20 month saying? My LB is only really saying “mama” “dada” “more” “hiya” he goes to nursery full time and they have approached me about this. Is there any advice anyone has on next steps. Many thanks x

Ours has loads with some favorites he says way more than anything else (tractor, ball, more please, mama, dada, baby, airplane, chicken, e-i-e-i-o, row row, apple, banana) but he can identify a lot more than he can say and will repeat almost anything now minus anything that starts with a c/k or a g sound. Only advice is read to him as much as possible, facing him so he can see you saying the words, and if you don’t have them already, get books like My 101 First Words or flash cards to go through together

We have zero words !!! So I really wouldn’t be worried about it

Does he follow simple commands and seemingly understands you? I know two cases of late speakers. One has just been diagnosed at nearly 6 with a speech development disorder, the other speaks perfectly fine. The difference between them was on the comprehension level

Our little boy is 20 months and says mum, dad, car, want more and hiya. Sometimes he’ll attempted the odd word. I’m not worried yet, he interacts well and communicates in other ways and understands most things we say to him

My little boy says bubble, wow and Dee da do (ready steady go) 😂 but that’s it, I don’t think there will be any mama anytime soon but we will see!

Mama, baba, dada, no, hi, ello, A, E, C, S, apple, uh oh, up, ball, bye bye. Afew more that he says sometimes. I sometimes get worried thunking if my LO is behind or delayed in speech (i think i over worry or compare him to other children i see that might be speaking more) i know thats not right but we all do it here and there. I shouldn’t be concerned?

Have you tried teaching him basic makaton? Its what Mr tumblr uses on something special and it actually improves their speech and encourages them (don’t ask me how 😂) we do basic signs so my LG learnt some of the signs then the words came not long after. It’s also good if they are being shy at any point because if she isn’t feeling brave enough to say thank you she just signs it. But it’s so easy she was learning them quicker than I was. Her favourite is cake 🤣

20 months is NOT a late speaker!! Seriously that nursery do not know what they’re saying
