Nutramigen

Our 8 month LO has suspected cows milk allergy and is EBF, so we have been managing this through my diet.. unfortunately I have to return to work soon and so we will need to find a suitable formula. GP prescribed Althera, which baby flat out refused.. I tried mixing it just 1oz with breast milk, but even at that low concentration, he wouldn't take it. We have now been prescribed nutramigen, so I'm looking for any tips or advice on how to get baby to take to the formula. Also any tips for prepping the formula, since we have to let boiled water cool to room temp and then as I'm mixing with breast milk currently, I need to get that to room temperature, otherwise baby is having a very cold bottle which he is likely to reject. Am I right in my understanding that nutramigen should not be warmed up at all?? Any pointers anyone has are greatfully received... Thanks

So I believe baby should be given an amino acid formula instead because they've reacted through breast milk Although no nutramigen doesn't need to be warmed up otherwise it'll kill the nutrients in it Most people fill all bottles for the day the night before with boiling water and leave on the side to get to room temp

@Emma-louise, that's interesting about the amino acid formula... I'll look that up and speak to GP if necessary.. Yep, I think I'll be boiling up the kettle and sorting bottles out tonight... but I'll also need to get my breast milk to room temp, too..

@Viv from what I've read is breast milk is basically hydrolysed like nutramigen is that's why it should be straight to aa formula Im sorry I can't help about the breast milk though I didn't breastfeed my girl so never had to do that part hopefully someone on here has and will help though

Former nutramigen mum here for a year. Fill all the bottles at night with boiling water leave to cool add the powder when needed and please don't heat it it'll destroy the formula and cause sickness. As for taste add alcohol free vanilla drops (my protein do one most mums use on Amazon). As for the breast milk to room temp I was physically unable to make milk myself so have no clue on that bit!

@Emma-louise that's so interesting about the breastmilk being hydrolysed... because he's been on the nutramigen for 24 hours, and his eczema has flared up already 🙄 he has also had a cold this week, so I wondered if it was just because of being a bit run down... but I think based on what you're saying about the breastmilk, it's probably more likely that the formula has caused it!! Back to the GP on Monday then...
