I’m considering quitting my nursing career and becoming a bartender 🥴

Quarter life crisis? Possibly. Definitely a reach. Could be worse. The kicker is I don’t even drink lmao. I’m just a burnt out full time nurse and mom looking for a change and more time to be with my kids.

My husband and I own a bar ☺️ A couple things to think about. The hours can de hard depending on your life style. Usually the money making shifts are at night, so another thing to consider. Depending on where you work, they may not offer insurance. But obviously as a nurse I’m sure you have maybe had to work whacky hours. Good luck with your decision ☺️

If you’re in the UK I don’t blame you! Lots of great things can do with nursing career though that are nicer work/ life balance? Research nurse?

being a bartender is literally awful in terms of having kids, long hours and always night shifts, but i guess in comparison to a nurse, it could be a lot better? i’d just take into consideration that your time off may be while they’re at school, and you may need to be at work by the time they need dinner and have the evening

Girl 🤦🏾‍♀️. I understand. I just switched areas. I no longer take care of patients hands on. I’m a nursing school instructor and I have an office job prn. A lot less stress.

You may quit nursing but you can keep your license active in case you would return. Try it and if it doesn’t work try a different nursing special

Where are you located Incog?

From a restaurant manager standpoint you will find it very hard to be hired somewhere if you are needing or wanting the same schedule every week. They really look for someone with open availability, and weekends are almost always a must. Weekends typically include getting home very late. Also consider the fact you won’t be burnt out from nursing related things but you have to socialize constantly, and cater to drunk people and demanding guests. I’m not trying to tell you not to make the decision but I’ve been in the restaurant business ten years now. All restaurants require that type of availability but you can find some that will work with you. But guests and all that and late nights/different shifts every week are to be expected. It’s what I hate most about my career but I stay because everything else I’ve considered is a pay cut. On the other hand my weekend servers and bartenders make close to 50 and hour. But that isn’t gaurenteed on a Monday etc.

Can you do both?

You’ll probably make more$

I had to switch to lighter work when I had kids. It’s emotionally draining at times but hospice pays more, is salaried, and you can create your own schedule with normal working hours. My company has amazing work life balance. It’s also physical light duty compared to floor nursing. Best change I made for my family for sure
