Having GDM and just feeling really crappy that no one could just tell me a straight answer

I’m 27 weeks pregnant and I have received a text yesterday from the diabetes specialist to ask for my consent to share that I have Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to my doctors and to download an app before I arrive for my appointment on Thursday but I haven’t been told anything other than go to the hospital to a clinic I have not had my blood results explained to me that I had weeks before and was told to come in again for emergency bloods and still couldn’t get a straight answer from anyone so my anxiety has been through the roof not knowing whether or not I have it or not I do have a high bmi and now I feel worried as I don’t know what I can and can’t eat I’ve not been told anything in person…. I’m worried that I can’t eat anything that I have at home as I don’t want to harm my baby and I’ve tried to google what I can eat but it’s just sending me into a downward spiral

So, the app is for when you get a glucose monitor, you'll be asked to submit readings 4 times a day. I got 'diagnosed' with 'some diabetes' a couple weeks ago too. https://www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/ there's some good resources on this site to help you get started. A lot of gdm can be diet controlled just fine, for example, I only have like 1 or 2 readings a week that are just a tad higher than the range.

For now just keep eating what you're eating, the first weeks readings I think will be to see what you eat and how it impacts your glucose levels. Then they can advise you on if you can stay diet controlled or need additional help with metformin or insulin to help process glucose

My baby has been measuring large for gestational age, accelerated growth was measure at 28, 30, and 32 weeks scans. As long as you don't eat a shit ton of non-complex carbs and sugar in a day, you should be fine. Portion sizes will help, as well as understanding what spikes your glucose levels and what doesn't

(I also had massive anxiety about it but the worst you can do is not eat at all)

Anyway, good luck, and you have support on here when you need it!

The anxiety and stress is normal, try not to go down a spiral. We all have and are going through it and you and your baby will be Just fine 💖 You can eat normally until you go to your appointment and meet with an Endocrinologist and a Dietitian, they will go through what you eat in a day, and then what they recommend to eat, with a guide and explain to you about monitoring your blood sugar. If you’re really anxious, try to limit your sugar intake until your appointment (try to limit sweets, sugary drinks and stick to carbs that have low sugar and try to take a couple of walks between meals to bring your blood sugar down). You got this! Gestational Diabetes is TEMPORARY. Most women don’t develop type 2 post pregnancy if you continue to follow guidelines and take care of yourself Also pro tip— when I first got diagnosed last April at 6 months, I limited my eating and lost a lot of weight, starving my baby, and that’s the worst you can do (over eat and under eat)

I was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks. Have a look at https://www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk This is a great website and there’s a Facebook page aswell. It will explain the foods that are less likely to spike your blood sugars. I gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby 3 weeks ago and was diet controlled throughout. Hopefully they will explain more to you at your appointment. If you do have it you will be given a testing kit to test your blood sugars first thing in the morning then after each meal either 1 or 2 hours after (depending on the nhs trust) and they will give you a target to be in. It feels overwhelming at first but basically limit carbs- whole grain. High protein and good fats. Once you get the hang of it it’s not that bad honestly.
