This is my issue too. Baby 10 days and suddenly struggling with the left boob. I think it’s same as Catherine mentioned, the let down is so strong that it puts him off. It feels fuller in the left boob x
@Catherine is there anything I can do like more or less time on that side or just gotta keep pushing through?
I had the same issue with my eldest. My midwife advised to lean back slightly to counter act the gravity of the let down, you can also hand express some away so that the volume isnt so much.
I had the same issue and resort to feeding my LO from the right boob till she falls off to sleep when she stirs for her next feed i give her the left boob which she seems to drink from fine when in a half sleep. It can be very overwhelming but what i have found is i have to keep trying different things to see what works for her. No baby is the same and if you try different things you will eventually find what works for your LO.
@Catherine I actually have the same problem with my left side! when you went to the lactation consultant did they tell you what to do to slow it down or give you any recommendation?
Strong let down maybe but also if the boob is full it might be like trying to suck on a watermelon 😂 The advice I got from a midwife and it seems to help is use a Haakaa or manually express for a couple of minutes to get the first fast flowing bit out then latch baby. I also try and lean back so it isn’t just dripping into her mouth.
@Elisa she said to try a few things, firstly to let down into a muslin or cloth, then latch LO back on. She also said to try leaning back so gravity works against the force of the flow. She also just said that over time my let down should even out and shouldn't be so intense. Still early days!
@Amy like Amy says you can use a haakaa that's what I've done with both my pregnancies. It slows the flow down and you can catch some milk to refrigerate or freeze at the same time!
I have the same problem, my poor little boy looks like he’s choking sometimes it’s so fast! And the milk goes everywhere 😂 I now always express a little before he latches and this helps. This also softens it a bit so it’s easier to latch- really hard to get a good latch if your breast is too full! X
I had this exact same thing! Please don't worry, it feels really awful in the moment, but my partner comes and takes her/soothes her for a second to calm us all down and then we try again. I went to a lactation consultant and we identified a very strong let down. So my little one was basically choking/getting hosed in the throat so it was her way of getting out of the stream.
