Gestational diabetes

Hello! I have received this letter today, however my midwife didn’t tell me any risk that I might have gd, I suppose is general for everyone? Is somebody that didn’t do it?

They do it for people that are likely to have Gd , that doesn’t mean you have it I originally from Africa and mostly like statistics show black people are prone to have diabetes however my results came out negative.

@Precious I heard that some women don’t do it so that s why I don’t know how they choose or by what factors

@Raluca the choose by your family history and also your ethnicity

@Precious weird cause nobody in my family /partner had it 😅

You need to definitely take the test. It’s 2 hours of your life for peace of mind. GD is fine treated by dangerous for baby if not

They usually offer it to you if your bmi is over 30 and you usually have to go in 2 times, its the most boring thing ever so make sure you bring a book or headphones for the 2 hour wait 🙁

@Raluca it isn’t about whether someone in family has had it before: your placenta can become insulin resistant meaning baby has to make it which is very dangerous for them. So many different reasons you might be higher risk. Worth testing! I have had two tests this pregnancy

@Em definitely will do it, is not late at 32 w if found? 🫣

@Lynds thanks for the tip😘

@Em I had growth scan yesterday and everything was perfect with baby thank God

Nobody in my family got diagnosed with it either but I just got told I have it at 32 weeks pregnant 😵‍💫 I was so shocked considering I’m underweight and I control sugar intake but the midwife reassured me that it has nothing to do with me or my diet, it’s all to do with my placenta that is out of my control.

@Maaham 🫣what do you take or how do you control it after u found out?

I don't really have any of the high risk markers and they diagnosed me at 33wk

But yeah, its not cause for alarm, just go with it, if you did have it, most of it is pretty easily managed via diet and it should go away after birth

@Dominique did they tell you it needs c-section or u can go naturally?

@Raluca I'm booked for elective C-section so it doesn't really apply to me, but basically íf the baby gets too big to pass through your birth canal, you might be induced or offered an emergency C-section. But, that's only if your baby is showing excessive growth. The thing I don't mind about being referred to the diabetic clinic to look after me, is way more scans and that is reassuring for me 😊 You're what, 32 weeks now right? So theoretically youre only 5 ways away from full term baby 😊 if the growth scans look okay, you should be fine for natural birth

@Dominique yes 32w ,the measurements were looking good for this stage 🙂

@Raluca I'm sure the Glucose tolerance test is just to rule out if you have GD. My baby had shown slightly enlarged abdominal growth, which is consistent with GD

I have no risk factors but don’t know my family history so took it with all of mine to be sure

It goes off a few things: Ethnic background Family history BMI 30 or more Or if you had a big baby previously It has nothing to do with how much sugar or sweets you are eating it’s actually about the carbs. Nothing you have done if you do have GD it’s just your placenta doing it all.

@Raluca it’s not common early on in pregnancy unless you’ve previously had it that’s why they don’t routinely test until atleast 24 weeks onwards

I’m 35 weeks and was never given this test. I’ve been having regularl growth scans and now want to give me one xx

I don't need one, apparently I don't have any risk factors x

@Raluca I had mine at 33 weeks after they found extra glucose in my urine because I had a big bowl of coco pops before my appointment 🙈

@Raluca I’m on a diet plan and have to keep track using the finger prick test 1 hour after eating
