Solve a Debate: Use of Rooms in House

My husband and I can’t agree so I’m coming to yall. We recently finished an addition on our house and it turned out better than we expected. We now find ourselves with more than room and we imagined and we cannot agree on use of spaces. We are a family of 3 with no pets. Mom, dad and 2.5yr old. We have a 5 bedroom, 3.5 bath house that has a sunroom, den (currently a home gym), a small room off the den (currently a home office), a 1 car garage and a detached shed that has electric/window heat&cool. How would YOU use the 3 extra bedrooms, den and small room off the den? Extra points for how you’d use the sunroom, garage and shed.

I think it all depends on what your needs are. My husband has always wanted a man cave, I have always wanted an art studio. So for us we would make one bedroom into a man cave, one into a guest bedroom, and the last one into a playroom with a desk and learning station. I would use the sunroom as a place for all my plants and an area for more messy/sensory play when the weather is bad. I would use the garage for my car and tools. The shed would be my art studio. If either of you work from home it might be nice to have the shed used as a home office for minimal interruptions. You could also use one of the rooms lined with some very nice shelving and store all your extras if needed (like holiday decorations, ECT ) I would leave the den as a home gym if that works for you guys. Now I'm extra curious as to how he wants to use it all?? 🤣

Thank you for this thoughtful comment! I love the idea of an art studio. I’d love to have a sewing and craft room one day ☺️ So extra context: when we bought the house mid COVID lockdown, it was a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath with a den and a bonus room. We divided the den (put up walls) to make my home office and one spare bedroom was used as my husbands office. Since having our son, we realized we needed more first floor living so we added the garage, sunroom, bedroom and full bathroom. The debate surrounds the “need” for a playroom. He said our house isn’t big enough for one and that we need all spare bedrooms. One for his office, two for guests. I offered to surrender my home office since I’ve returned to office, turn it into the gym and the gym becomes the playroom. Even when it doesn’t impact his home office, he doesn’t see the need for a playroom. He said “the average person with less than 6 bedrooms wouldn’t have a playroom”…

That's such a strange thing to say, imo!! If you have space for it a playroom / learning space is a great idea! All his toys can be kept out of the bedroom and the living room and he will have a place for learning and eventually doing homework. Hopefully in the next year we will be moving to a bigger home and I really want to do a room like this for her. Maybe you could suggest just trying it and then seeing how you both like it

@Sarah this is perfect and exactly what I want for our son. I think any of our “extra” rooms could be used like this but he feels like a playroom is a rich person thing to have. It’s not like I’m trying to put in a wine cellar 🫠🤣

😂🤣 Right! Maybe he thinks you're wanting an elaborate out there kind of playroom. Maybe if you suggest it more of a station to do arts and crafts and practice writing he will be more open to it. I asked my husband and until I showed him the pictures he thought a playroom was a crazy idea too...men 😂
