Weaning Guilt

Sorry, this is a bit of a vent. I feel really guilty about weaning my 5.5 month old. He’ll be 6 months on the 17th of December and is showing all the signs of readiness. I thought I’d try giving him little bits of what we’re having just to see how he gets on with it. He’s had a little bit of mash, a biscuit and a chip 😂 he’s loved all of them, swallowed them, reached for more, etc. I’m considering starting to formally wean him on Monday and offering him vegetables, etc. I just feel so guilty about it because I keep wondering, what if he isn’t ready? What if his digestive system isn’t ready? But logically I know his digestive system isn’t going to magically mature in 2 weeks, so he’s likely ready for food if he’s showing the developmental signs of readiness. How do I stop feeling guilty? I feel so stupid 😭 I just want to do right by him.

I feel less guilty and more scared of her choking or have an allergic reaction lol I love that my baby gets to enjoy the food we are having.

@Monique yes! I’m so scared of him having an allergic reaction or choking, my partner was so chill watching him eat the chip and I thought my heart was going to climb out of my throat 😂

You can feed him and still breastfeed, I'm not sure what you mean? Their nutrition still comes mainly from breast milk or formula until 12 months. Are you switching to formula? You don't have to, or you don't have to breastfeed, do what you need!

@Lianne I’m still breastfeeding of course 🙂 I’m just feeling guilty because you aren’t advised to introduce solids until 6 months and my son is 5.5 months

Ohhhh ok. To me the term weaning means stopping breast feeding. We started my daughter just after 5 months bc first of all she's huge at 20 pounds, and very clearly ready for purees, watching us looking sad while we eat and chomping her gums!

I think it’s ok to give them a few bites of food here and there at 5.5 mos, if you are worried about choking download the solid starts app it’s really helpful telling how to prep food so it’s not a choking hazard they have an instagram page too

My baby started solid at 4.5 mo. I started with giving him purees, like sweet potatoes, avocados, bananas, purple yam, carrots and butternut squash. Today at 5.5 mo I started giving him butternut squash purees with tiny ground pork n mashed tofu. I only feed him solid once a day and the rest he still breastfeed. He also not picky towards his food
