Changing name on passport

I recently got married and I’m in the process of changing my surname. If I change my name, do I HAVE to update my passport? Im only asking because I have 9 years left on it and I don’t really wanna fork out for a new one if I don’t have to. Surely I can book future holidays in my maiden name to match my passport or is that not allowed lol? Uk based

I got married May 2023 and deliberately didn't change passport as even now still have about 5 years left on it so I'm in no rush! Only thing is if you don't change on passport you can't change your name with NHS, so all my scans in maiden name and i think when i have baby they may refer to it as my maiden name too. Mostly everything else I've changed it on though!

I was in the same situation and I changed my passport as well to not risk any problems just in case.

@Katie ohh that’s good to know, thank you!

@Su yeah I think I might change it over in the new year

I didn't change my name on my passport as I, too, had quite a few years left, but was able to change all of my bank accounts using my marriage certificate. I changed my name at my doctor's (therefore NHS) by just telling them- no ID required. Just to add that not everyone has a passport anyway! Others will successfully change their name without it.

I changed my name on everything except my passport because had 8 years left. My NHS name has been changed too

Just be careful when booking holidays if adding car rental on if your passport and licence are different! Speaking from experience 🤣

@Sarah fair point, not everyone has a passport

@Katie noted 😆

Interesting!!

I've been abroad in maiden name a few times and no issues but maybe I'll change with NHS now. Good to know

@Katie I changed my name on my NHS records in 2017 and my driving licence in 2023. I didn't change my passport at all. It's now expired so when I do renew it I'll change it then. My banks asked for my marriage certificate to change my name but the doctors took me at my word. The hardest one to change has been my water bill so that's still in my old name!😆

Yes I've randomly changed it on somethings and not others. Got a list of things to change it on, it's such an effort?!!! And not one singular one makes it feel official

@Katie I changed my name with nhs and haven’t changed my passport. A lot of people don’t even have a passport

I think my concern was more if I was abroad and my health information was in a different name it would get confusing. Rather than other way around if that makes sense ?

@Katie I get what you’re saying but the NHS isn’t linked worldwide. As long as your travel insurance matches the name on your passport it’s fine.

I am a travel specialist and we actually advise that people DO NOT change their name on their passport if they have booked their honeymoon before they got married as it causes all sorts of complications with the flights and people who have not listened have had to either pay a name change fee to the airline or not been allowed to board. So we recommend they wait til back from honeymoon. So if youre planning any trips make sure you wait til youre back and have no impending flights. I personally have been married 2.5 years and still havent changed the name on my passport for the same reason as you (it had 9 years left so didnt want to pay to change it now) I will probably just change when it expires but have changed it everywhere else.

Might need to be careful should anything happen on holiday and need to claim on insurance?! If passport/travel details are different to your medical records they may not help?! Have no idea.. but have sneaky feeling they'd be a pain if names are different.
