The best way I found with my first is to strip them down to their nappy - you can cover with a blanket whilst their feeding and if they start falling asleep take the blanket off again just to wake them up again a bit. I also found changing their nappy in between swapping sides also helped wake them up enough to finish their feed. My first was the same though he'd lost 11% body weight by day 5 because he would fall asleep whilst feeding.
Are you stripping baby and having skin to skin for each feed? If not, every feed if you can skin to skin is a must for keeping baby awake. Tickling little ones toes when they’re getting drowsy can help keep them more awake. Has your mature milk come in yet or is it still colostrum? Do you have any collected colostrum you could give baby between Feeds or at start of feed via syringe? If your mature milk has come in, do you have a Hakka you can use to collect your let down on the boob you’re not feeding on? If you’re keen to exclusively breast feed rather than give bottles, you can find videos online that show how to give cup feeds to newborns which will help if you want to give some extra milk between Feeds while trying to get on top of weight gain! Can be tough getting on top of a sleepy baby but once they get going gets bit easier!
I do strip baby down everytime, which definitely helps until he gets used to the temperature 😂 we also do nappy changes either just before or in the middle. And every feed is skin to skin 🥰 I think I’m producing a mix of colostrum and mature, it’s definitely thickening up at times! On advice of the midwives, I’m pumping some colostrum and giving between feeds depending on how his feed has gone- we’re doing a mix of cup feeding and syringe feeding for this. Lots of great advice so far, thank you!!
Sounds like you’re doing an amazing job! Hopefully persevering with it all will help little ones weight get back on track 🙏 Feel free to post and let us know how it’s going when you’ve next seen midwife ☺️
@Kat baby has put on 2oz, out of the concerning weight loss zone and the feeding plan has ended! We still plan to do a little cup feeding with in demand breastfeeding to help him keep putting weight back on 💚 We have seen such a change in his feeding habits and it is flowing so much easier 💚 Thank you all for your help!
I used to leave mine in her diaper. I used to undress mine and leave her in her diaper and just cover her with a blanket when she was breastfeeding during the evening because she had jaundice as a baby So undressing could work, tickling the feet could work too, cranking the arm when he falls asleep could work too.
