When I worked in a toddler room we also tended to go out until around feels like -20. Depended on other factors too like how much of the "feels like" was due to wind which is less tolerable by little ones. If it was like -18 we'd go out but not stay out for like a full 2 hours or something. Played it by ear with how the children felt. As for the wool, though warm it isn't waterproof. I suggest adding a waterproof mitten like the material snow suits/pants are made of. And the boots should be lined winter boots in addition to any wool or other socks.
My 2 year old is outside playing with big sis unless it's feeling like -20 or colder. She is pulled on a sled every morning with big sis to go to school, I walk no mattervthe weather. Waterproof, not water resistant gear is essential. Reima makes the best waterproof WARM mittens and are worth every penny. Boots need to be comfort rated to -30 minimum. This stuff is expensive new, but you can find really good quality stuff second hand on Facebook for less thank junk stuff is new. Please don't hesitate to ask a fellow mom for opinions when you're out shopping ā¤ļø
Weāre still outside playing with our toddler in -16 The cold air is so good for them! Itās all about dressing them appropriately. Anything more than -10 we do a sweatsuit underneath the snowsuit, thin mitten underneath waterproof ones and 2 pairs of socks under snow boots and a balaclava. However like other moms have said -20 is our cap and at that point itās too cold.
Ours is reduced play time at -15 anything colder then they might not go out depending on weather (sunny might go out 10-15 mins; cloudy/snow, no) -20 not going out. Need snowpants, winter coat, snow boots, mitts (always leave extra at the daycare) hat . You could always leave extra socks too. Wool socks are great as they wick moisture away from the feet, but they need to be changed often.
Hi, RECE here thatās worked at a few different centres! As long as children are dressed appropriately, it is safe to go out up to -20 (with wind chill), anything between -10 and -20 are usually āhalf timeā out. Iāve always followed the children though, if noses and cheeks get very red or if mittens/hats are not staying on, you cut it shorter š
Get your LO waterproof/resistant mittens, the ones made of the same type of material as the coat and snowpants. Wool mitts will make them colder when the mitts get wet. As for the temp, cancelling outdoors at -5c is ridiculous. I know that sounds judgey, but if outdoors is cancelled at -5c then kids will spend the entirety of November, sometimes even October, through May inside with no sunshine, no fresh air, much less exercise as the indoor equivalents at daycares are not nearly as good or sizable as what is outside. I used to work daycare and grew up in northern ontario. Depending on where you live there may be a provincial guideline as to when they can't go out but from what I remember where I was at -15c they reduce the amount of time spent outside but still go out, and -20 or -25 was the cut off. It gets cold in Canada, even where I live in southern Ontario it can get as cold as -30c and feel colder. Once your LO is in school, they'll be going out to recess unless it's -30c or there's a bad windchill.
