Does it matter if your baby wears a coat in their car seat?

Mixed reviews online about it not being advisable but it’s cold. Is there a safety issue?

Yes you can't strap in the car seat safely and it can cause a risk of baby overheating. Therefore a risk of SIDS

@Samina thanks. Regarding the SIDS. Even for a very short journey?

Yep it's what's advised. Follow safeintheseat on Instagram for further info.

The reason we dont is because it can leave slack in the straps and children can then slip out if you crash. We do our usual layers including a jumper then add on a jacket (like a hoodie type jacket) ontop. You can also get full body suits which are like a fluffy jumper type material for when it's colder. We just then use a blanket in the car.

@Joanna yeah we have a blanket so will just use that or like you said lay coat over them.

It’s the puffy coats that are a problem, they’re a big no. Other than that it’s the concern that some people don’t adjust the straps after each use and so if they’re wearing something thinner next time they may fly out in a crash. Personally I adjust the straps every single time

@Catherine yeah I always adjust the straps each time.

Defo not advised for safety

The fit is incorrect with a coat on even for short journeys. The car seat advice is indoor clothing only. We use a blanket when going from the car indoors or put the jacket on then. It’s absolutely not worth the risk.

@Deborah 100% agree. Now I know it’s coming off. It’s rare that I have put her in car with it on. I feel bad I didn’t know sooner.

@Catherine sorry but that’s not the concern. It’s not about people forgetting to adjust the straps, it’s that the coat doesn’t allow a good fit. If you have to adjust the straps then that means baby wasn’t in properly in the previous trip as the coat was stopping the straps being tight enough (obviously some adjustments are due to growth, or if you slacken to get baby out and then need to tighten next time etc.)

@Samantha that’s what I said. The puffy coats are all a no go in car seats. Only thinner materials I’m only adjusting the straps as I loosen them to get them out

@Samantha so no, you’re wrong

No coats in car seats. During the colder weather we provide blankets for our kiddies while in the car that they can use over their laps while strapped in nice and snug as well as the obvious heating x

No coat no matter how cold it is! It’s advised not to for a safety reason. Layer with a blanket and put the heating on in the car. Baby won’t freeze in the space of 5 minutes whilst the car warms up. I’ve got 2 children and never have they got too cold from no coat in the car seat x
