When my daughter started her periods at 10 she wore pads but she felt uncomfortable changing them at school. She ended up using period underwear for school and pads at home. Period underwear is really good and they can be worn for about 6-8hrs so they're perfect for school. You can also get pads designed for girls which are a little smaller and less bulky. I also made a "period pack" for my girls to carry in their school bag which included spare underwear, pads, small bags to use to throw the pads away in, hand sanitiser and lip balm which I put in a small pencil case or bathroom bag
