Mixing ready made formula with powder formula

My little one is 16 weeks and has always had a problem with digesting just powder so has been only had mainly pre made bottles but this is really expensive we’ve been to the health visitor today and she said to give water between feeds and she said to find out if it’s okay to mix the powder formula with the pre made bottles so she won’t be as constipated as just having powder does anyone know if it’s okay to do this?

Please don't give ur baby water. Health visitors r not doctors n my son has a paediatrician and a dietician n they said absolutely not give babies water even tiny amount before they're 6 months, this included diluted formula. Before 6 months there kidneys haven't developed enough and long and repeated exposure to water and cause them to shut down n go into renal failure it's so dangerous. Ask a doctor before u do this, and ask one that specialises in babies and children gps r not well informed on these kinds of subjects. If u add formula to premade bottles they will get more constipated if ur not watering it down with correct ratio ull make the formual so much thicker and ur baby will really struggle to digest it. Formula always needs to be made correctly based on manufacturers recommendations to keep ur baby safe, messing with this can cause ur baby to get ill and possible life long problemsif u continue to do it for a long time. I would go doctors see if they need can give u some lactulose for them x

No don't give your baby water. It causes intoxication in babies and can cause diarrhoea and dehydration, do not add extra formula to pre made milk either as its already got the calories in it and adding formula is the same as adding too little water to a formula bottle. You could however if desperate try adding an extra ounce of water to your powdered bottles but not every time, it's just to make it slightly thinner so it's easier to digest. What makes you think your baby can't digest powder?

So I gave my little girl 30ml of boiled water when she was constipated and it eased her up a lot. I do agree with the above with regards to inbetween feeds or diluting however I don’t see the issue with water in small amounts every now and again - my obstetrician told me to add one or two drops of pure orange into it - however I haven’t tried as I changed her milk and she was no longer constipated. Powder formula usually can cause constipation initially so if you’ve always gone back to premade after the constipation bubas stomach wont get use to it - have a look at comfort formulas they’re meant to be more easy to digest - I switched to a goats milk which is more expensive but solved my issues - good luck (my daughter is called Aria too 🥰) x

@Phoebe-grace i gave her two bottles of powdered formula for two days and she didn’t have a dirty nappy for 4 days after but with the pre mades she either goes every day or every other

@Holly it doesn't mean she can't digest it, powders is digested differently to thinner formulas or breastmilk. It's fine for a baby to go up to 7 days without a poo because their bellies are getting used to having to process something rather than pure liquid, when baby starts eating solids you'll find the same happens xx

Mixing between the 2 and not having consistency is gonna mess there tummy up it might be what's making things worse. Doctors recommend that if u switch from one thing to another u have to use it consistently for a minimum of 2 weeks and do not change formulas more then once per month max but u can really hurt there tummy if u don't pick one and stick with it. It takes 2 weeks minimum for them to get use to it but it's recommended that u wait at least 4 weeks before u decided it doesn't work unless there's immediate dangerous symptoms like lack of wet nappies, rock solid stomach, stops eating all together, blood in their nappies, throwing up entire bottles, blood in sick or spit up. The chances of any of these happening is slim but these would be immediate reasons to switch bk to premade bottles and not carry on with regular formula x

@Holly I prefer using the ready made formula but it acts like a laxative on my girl, so I mix them. I always make a big load of powdered formula in 2 bottles (about 400ml worth) and store in the fridge. Then to make her bottle I put 80ml of the powdered formula that I have made and 80ml of the ready made formula. So it’s half and half. This has kept my girl going regular. No more constipation or very runny poo.

@Rachel thank you this is what the health visitor said to try but she wasn’t sure if it was okay to do some powder and some premade in the same bottle

@Holly absolutely fine. It’s practically the same stuff. I always did it with my first daughter whose 23 months now and never had an issue.

@Holly my little girl struggled with constipation when switching from breast to premade and premade to powder. We now do powder for every bottle but the night feed and she goes once a day, but on the transition it was pretty difficult, so I’d say try stick at it for at least a week if you can, see if it’s just caused by the switch not by not having it for every bottle. We also do a lot of leg cycling too each day, just when changing nappies x
