Autism or neurodivergent diagnosis

Has anyone had their LO put forward for autism or any neurodivergent diagnosis? What was the process? The HV’s forms are very broad questions and their process is slow. They seem to be deterring me from going directly to the GP for referral which I find frustrating. Can you advise what your experiences were.

Me! I spoke to my HV about my concerns and she agreed and referred my boy to the paediatrician to start the assessment process. I didn't need to fill any forms in, i think she must have done it all.

@Amy thank you. I think I may see the GP. Do you know after referral how long it took you to see a paediatrician for assessment and then to diagnosis if you got one yet?

Sorry it takes a long time unfortunately, my LO was referred and only got seen recently. There’s still 2 more appointments to go but was told there’s 8 months until the next one

My boy was referred March/April time last year and we had our paediatrician appointment in the July (this is unusual as the wait list is long, I think I just lucked out with a cancellation or something). His next appointment should be March this year (after he turns 3) and I'm assuming we'll get a diagnosis then, but who knows 🤷‍♀️ Has your HV said why they can't refer themselves?x

I’d go and see your gp. I took my son and we were seen in 11 months. However it is totally dependent on your health board. Where I live now, the wait time is 44 months. Feel free to pm me if you want any info and I’ll help if I can!

@Lee-naomi thank you. I put in a request to see the GP and they have said they will review our request at the end of March. So may be a while for us.

@Amy thanks. HV just brush off concerns as normal, so a bit of a conflict of opinion unfortunately. I may start researching privately.

@Dee thank you. Do you know what typically each appointment entails if you don’t mind sharing?

The National Autistic Society are great for information, advice, etc. Can't recommend them enough ❤️ No harm in raising concerns with your GP for a second opinion too.
