question for non-americans

recently i’ve started watching a show based in canada and they referred to the americans as “the yanks” and i had never really heard that before (besides like the new york yankees baseball team and yankee doodle dandy lmfao) so it made me wonder if non-americans have heard/call us that and are there any other names for us? just curious nothing wrong with any names for us😂

I’ve heard yanks but when I was younger. I’m in my 40s. Mainly Americans. Or sometimes specific for the state,new yorkians.

In the Uk I’ve heard loads and loads of people refer to Americans as Yanks

Yep Yanks or Yankees feel like it’s a bit more something an older person would say but it’s commonly understood. I’d say it has a slightly derogatory slant to it and is more often used for flag waving we love our country types. (Not always but hear it said this way more than any other!)

Isn’t it a slight slur. Think it became popular in the 1940s to describe US soldiers as “over sex, over paid and over here”as the saying went.

I haven't heard anyone call Americans yanks and I'm a Canadian. We just call you the Americans or some other names I can't say on peanut. A Brit did recently call me and someone a yank though lol

Definitely something older people say. Don’t really hear it now but everyone understands it still.

I’m curious now too lol

Canadian friend here! I’ve never heard the term “yanks” but both of my parents have! Maybe it’s a generational thing?

@Zainab🗝️ i’m curious about the other names 😂😂

@Emily Yes. I think so. I heard it a lot in the 80s. But not now.

In the handmaid's tale when the Canadians are protesting for the Americans to leave they have signs, "go home yanks" But my mother uses fricken yanks when she talks about like people from NY or jersey...she lives in NC...for 5 years. But is from jersey herself. It's cringe.

Well I’m flabbergasted Americans didn’t know!

@Charlie didn’t know what?

I think Charlie is surprised we didn’t know we are called yanks I mean it makes sense we have other names and we are seen in different ways in different countries I’m interested to see what other countries outside of the app would say

@Layla Caron oh haha yeah i had never even thought about it 😂 do we have other names for other countries? i can’t think of any

In the US that word is used. In the South, that’s what they call anyone from the North, a Yankee. There’s a song we sing in America, I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy. We learned it in school.
