Is this a ridiculous name?

Husband and I have fallen in love with “Brochan” for a boy, pronounced “BRAWCH-ehn” (“broch” rhyming with “loch”). It’s Scottish Gaelic for “porridge”, but we figured lots of more popular Gaelic names also have mundane meanings - e.g. “Brodie” means “muddy ditch”.

NB - we are Scottish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Is a mundane meaning the goal?

@Asha no, a name we love is 🥰

I’ve heard worse names And I feel like if needed a positive analogy of porridge can be associated to it Like a good bowl of porridge, just the right balance of warmth, substance, and soul. Or A slow-simmered success, rich with patience and care. Or steady and nourishing, like a pot of porridge that keeps you going all day.

I also think I like Eachann which means brown horse 🤷🏾‍♀️

We are having Sorley. Which is old Scottish name. I think the meaning is cute!

I'm confused because Brawch and Loch aren't pronounced the same, or I didn't think they were. Isn't Loch pronounced like Lock? I think it's kinda cute either way!

@Hannah it is pronounced like that if you say it in your head in a Scottish accent 🤣

@Hannah idk how else to write it phonetically 🤷‍♀️ but no, “loch” is not pronounced like “lock” 😱

I like it 🤗

Scottish as well and it’s cute! I think the people that don’t like it have a different accent 😂

@Hannah no, loch is pronounced lawch

I’m Scottish, I think it’s a nice name

I think it’s cute! I really don’t read into meanings of names, if you like the name and how it sounds that’s all that matters in my book. I also don’t think you’ll have any issues with anyone pronouncing it wrong in Scotland… other places may say Brock-en 🫣

@Katrina I think I could live with that. Was more worried about people saying “broken” 🤣

@Rachael, ah, thank you.

@Eve 🤣🤣🤣 I love me a scottish accent.

If it's not pronounced lock, then I think Lawch is the correct way to spell it phonetically. We clearly just pronounce it incorrectly where I'm from, lol Or at least I do 🤣

I’m in the US and I think people would likely pronounce it Brock-en or Bro-Chan here, but probably not Broken. People would probably pronounce it correctly in Scotland though so it doesn’t matter really😅 It has a cute meaning too so why not go for it?

Could you change the spelling.. Brockhan?

Do you live in Scotland? People here should get it. We called our baby Gael like the ancient people of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

If people can pronounce Lochlan and Lachlan etc then they can pronounce Brochan. Please don’t tell me anyone’s out there saying LACK-LAN 😂🤦🏻‍♀️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@Liz NO 🤣

@Maeve That’s lovely 🥰 yeah we’re in Glasgow. OH just says we’d have to avoid the western isles forever 🥲😂

I like it sounds like Lachlan but with a br and no

I agree with other comments. In the USA, if it wasn't said first, we'd likely mess up and read it like bro-can, brock-an, bro-chan, broch-an. I can imagine it butchered in 17 different way somehow lol. But that's not an issue where you're at obviously
