Temporary accommodation

Anyone who’s been in temporary accommodation with a child or children and been placed in a hotel with no cooking facilities and no bathroom, just a small shower and toilet, how long were you there and when did they move you to a self contained accommodation with kitchen and bathroom? I’ve got a one year old and really struggling here.

Where you based which council X ?

I advise you to look for a lawyer to help you with your case otherwise you’ll stay there forever

Camden

Where can I find a lawyer for free?

Yes, I was put into travelodge 6months in , I could possibly still be there if I wasn't proactive and looked for my own place, all the councils advice now is to go private, you could be on the list but chances are you could be waiting years! I was adamant to get out as i was heavily pregnant , in one with room with my 16yr old and my 1yr old , it was hell! I asked could I have a steriliser due to baby they said no health and safety, they dod room checks omg we also have to change rooms every 30days! Sometimes not even on the same floor! Thankfully we did have wash facilities in a proper bathroom etc but like @Sofia said you could be there forever T.A can last years!! My advice is look on openrent, your local council should pay the first month's rent and deposit as it's there responsibility to house you,!

Should you find a property you can't fully cover for example your lha could be 1,600 but the rent is 1,800, you could apply for a dhp to help cover the shortfall, till you either find more affordable housing, even if younhave to move out of London or work more hours 💜

a hotel without a kitchen and bathroom is not classed as long term temporary accommodation, it is classed as interim temp accommodation. temporary accommodation would be the self contained flat they allocate you, which you tend to be in for years/indefinitely until you find a property yourself or win a council flat. i was in hotels/hostels with my two children (my 2nd was newborn in the beginning) for over a year. and it most likely would’ve been longer but i was HOUNDING them to move us due to the difficulties of living in a hotel/hostel. i was in premier inn’s / travel lodges all over london, changing every 2/3 weeks, longest a month. then got moved to a hostel with a shared dining area (only microwaves and fridge provided) for 4 months, than another for another with a microwave and fridge for another 4 months.

legally, they are only supposed to keep families / people with children in hostel/hotel type accomdation for under 6 weeks, but due to what they say is a property shortage, it goes way over this. generally, it’s usually 6 months before they start actually trying to get you to self contained temp accommodation, but this can go down to your council. there are many adults without children who live YEARS in hotel/hostel type accommodation. i remember even elderly people over the age of 60 being in a hostel for 3+ years. having children does definitely give you priority, just not as much as you’d think.

@Elle (i can't see waves) I’m so sorry you had to go through all that, I’ve tried to look into private but it’s just not an option for me right now, I also won’t find anything close to my area unfortunately

@anisha 𝜗𝜚 did they eventually place you in your own flat? Thankfully they haven’t moved us around, we’re in the same place since 31st of Jan but it’s outside our borough but I expected that. Yeah I was told legally it should be 56days and not more than that. Can I msg you to ask some questions if you don’t mind? x

@Sab I messaged you x
