Which spelling?

Me and my partner really like the Irish name Aoife but he is worried that the traditional way of spelling it will set her up for a lifetime of explaining her name. If we choose this name should we go for the traditional spelling of Aoife or the alternative (more phonetic) spelling of Eifa?

Definitely Aoife. If I saw Eifa written down I’d assume it’s eye-fa not ee-fa

I think people are more aware of Irish names and spellings than they used to be

We considered Aoife as a middle name but went for Saoirse instead. Had loads of people ask how to pronounce it. lol.

Aoife is one of the most common ones out there, so I'd definitely go for the traditional spelling

I think more and more people know how to pronounce Aoife

People don’t even know how to pronounce my sons name which is Asa so go with the spelling you prefer there’s no way to ensure people actually know how to pronounce either x

Eifa is not an Irish name. The correct name is Aoife

Traditional! Let people do the work! I studied Brian Friel's Translations at A Level and as a result, even as a British Pakistani, I'm unusually defensive of traditional Irish language where I can be 😅 Please don't water it down!
