Hospital walk through

Are you planning on doing a hospital walk through to get acquainted with the facility before you go into labor? Did you do it with a previous pregnancy? Do you recommend it? During the tour, what questions should be asked? TIA!

I didn’t, I just never had a day to do so with my hubby, my doctor gave us a folder with pamphlets of all they offered, classes , etc and I did a virtual tour on their site. I also went in recently for contractions and dehydration so I’m a little familiar now with where it’s at and the check in process 😅

I did the virtual walkthrough that Kaiser offered

I did and as a FTM it eased my mind. I know where to go and what to expect! I don’t remember what questions I asked but I took notes of the things I knew I’d forget! Like how many people during birth and how many visitors post birth.

I did and it was reassuring to see everything and have the policies explained and ask all my questions

We did it! I actually work in the hospital I’m giving birth in but my husband and I did a walk-through and it was really good to hear some of the things they told us in the tour (things even I didn’t know), and plus I really wanted my husband to have an idea of where to go on D-day: where to take me to check in, where the bathrooms are, how things go, how to find the cafeteria, entrances and exits, etc. Definitely recommend.

I did, and it was great! Really eased my mind about what to expect. I asked about the provided amenities. For example: My delivery unit had a shower but not a tub, so I couldn't labor submerged, but I could labor in water still. It had a limited number of mobile monitors for walking around the unit if I needed continuous monitoring, which I did end up needing, so it was awesome to know that was available. They also provided a birthing ball and peanut ball, so I didn't need to bring my birthing ball from home. It was also nice to know there were only 8 delivery rooms on the unit, and they really managed to make me feel like a priority while I was there. You can also ask if they have a packing list or if there are certain items people typically bring. I also confirmed their guest/support person policy. (I was allowed 2 support people to be there 24/7 and nobody else until I was in the postpartum unit and could have a few more guests during visiting hours.)

I just did mine last week and it really eased my mind. It's our 1st baby and it was refreshing to know the unit and level of care that my nurses can provide & where to go when I get into labor. I was also able to identify if the facility has a nursery and what level of NICU it had. Working as a nurse recruiter, I talk to so many L&D nurses day in & day out, so knowing that my baby will be cared for is amazing. My unit is considered an LDRP unit which means that the room is equipped to do labor, delivery, recovery and mother-baby postpartum care in one room. While if you are in a Level I hospital, this is normally separate. W/ my unit, my L&D RN will also be my mother-baby nurse and postpartum care/after birth, me, baby & hubs will be in one room. If baby needs to be transported to a higher Level IV NICU for extra care, unfortunately it will not be in the same hospital. So hubby is prepared to accompany baby to the nearest Level I hosp. which I was able confirm on my visit. I highly recommend going! 😊

Like Allison said above, you'll also be able to identify where everything is at and what to pack & what not to pack in your hospital bag. Where the cafeteria is at, kitchenette, visiting hours, limits on # of ppl during visit, where your hubby is going to sleep. If you need a squat bar during labor, ball, doula, breast pump, etc. You'll also be able to ask how many ppl can be in the room during your delivery, they allow up to 4ppl in mine, which is a lot! 😆 If you do have some specific questions about your birth plan, this is the perfect time to ask those too.

@Jamila yesss! It’s my first one too! I’m starting to panic as time is approaching! 😅 Will definitely prepare my birth plan by then. And not down all the good questions everyone has left!

I know, same here. but you'll be in great hands! Looks like we have about the same weeks left. But yes definitely prepare for it and ask away any questions you have when you get there ☺️

Yes I did my labor and delivery tour at Kaiser. The nurse that did the tour did a great job at explaining everything so no one really asked questions!

Since I’m delivering at the same place I had my first at 14 months ago, no, I’m not. I did do a virtual walk through with my first pregnancy though. My OB office is located in the hospital so while I was familiar with it, I hadn’t seen labor and delivery yet and was still curious. It made me feel better personally in feeling confident in where I’d be delivering, so I say do it if you think it’ll help! I didn’t have any questions personally, but if anything comes to mind just ask! You could always check google for questions you could potentially ask!
