BLW suggestions

Hey! My LG is 9 months, I didn't do BLW straight off the bat as it terrified me and I couldn't cope. We have chunky puree foods, melties finger food, she has little bites of my food but I feel like she's ready now to eat proper solids. Has anyone got any suggestion on what to do for first that won't give me a heart attack? We've tried avocado and carrot strip so far but she hated them TIA! Picture for tax

Omelette is a good one, can also be used for testing egg allergy if you haven’t done so already. broccoli and other soft cooked veg. Pancakes are also good, can add strawberries, bananas etc.

I give my little one bread crusts with any soft bread removed and he loves it. I add butter too cos he’s a slim sausage. It’s bread from a local bakery so I know it’s not loaded with heaps of salt and sugar. Other than that he loved variations of meatballs (like shredded courgettes and beef mine shaped and baked, but you can add more veg and some herbs) and he loves cheese muffins, which I found great to add greens to, spinach, etc

Once he turned 1 year I started giving him most of what I eat provided there’s no or very little salt, and it’s the right size for him. I check how to serve foods I’m not sure about in the solid start app

Honestly i dont see the point of blw when poor babies dont have any teeth😄 it is just a hype. We did puree from 6 months and my boy started eating sendwiches on his own when he was 10months old.

It’s not just a hype, it’s great for coordination and teaches a baby to chew very effectively, that’s just what I noticed myself. My little one was munching on steamed veg, some meats and fish just fine with no teeth. And at some point he started refusing being spoon fed, babies like to be in control

@Katya Of course, everyone is free to do what they think is best and believe in whatever they like. Personally, though, I just don’t see the point in giving food that needs chewing to people who don’t have teeth. We wouldn’t give chunky food to elderly people who have no teeth. it would be unkind. So why would we do the same to babies? To me, it just seems more logical to think about it this way.

@Nora I would argue that BLW is more likely the way that babies have always been fed and purées have been a marketing ploy for the last few decades. I’ve not bought any baby food or had to cook my baby any separate food by doing BLW. We just started giving her a single veg from what we were eating and slowly increased as she’s got used to chewing her food. She has pasta, bread, curry, roast dinner etc… they don’t need teeth to chew!

@Lauren I’m not trying to convince anyone , that’s not why I brought it up. Some people see it one way, others see it differently, and that’s perfectly natural. You should do things the way that feels right for you. I’m really not here to persuade you.

@Nora chewing is an action of the jaw so teeth are irrelevant plus babies gums are hard. Let your baby bite you and see how hard their gums are. My daughter will hardly let me feed her, even when we do use a spoon she has to hold it and guide it into her mouth each time 😅 There is nothing wrong with either method, it is purely personal choice. I do both with my girl because that way I can be sure of how much she is actually eating but she is also getting used to the different textures and learning how to feed herself. She is 8.5 months and has had over 120 different foods so far ☺️

Oh dear, it looks like I’ve stumbled into the BLW ambassadors’ group! 😄Honestly, feel free to go ahead with blw. You dont need to convince me that it is fine. I never said it was wrong. I just personally don’t see much point in it, and it’s not what I chose to do. But really, everyone should do what they feel is best, as long as it’s safe. I’m sure you’re all keeping a close eye on your little ones anyway.

@Nora lol just because I pointed out that anatomically you don’t need teeth to chew that makes it a blw ambassadors group? You should read my entire comment where I said there is nothing wrong with either method

@Nora I did both BLW and puree because BLW is messy and time consuming, but saying there’s no point in it is very poorly informed. I mean why teach your baby anything at all? Also the old people argument doesn’t fit here, I would absolutely give steamed vegetables to my elderly after my BLW experience. I think if you actually tried it you wouldn’t be saying this. If you can mush the food with your fingertips you’ll have no trouble doing that with gums. And jaws are much stronger than your hands

Banana is a good one! Cheap, easy to carry around, mushes up easy for the first tries. Then when you’re more comfortable to do bigger chunks, baby can self feed. My baby boy is obsessed!

Use the Solid Starts app/website to help inform you how to serve BLW food. Their Instagram is fab. A banana for example, if you peel is and stick your finger down the middle at the top, it will split into 3 sections. This is better than cutting as it doesn't great a slippery edge with a knife. I usually buy smallish bananas, cut the banana in half and then split it into 3 and they are the perfect size chunks

I was the same to begin with and we started with boiled veg and soft fruits and then started doing things like roasted veg but now I get most of my BLW ideas from TikTok there are tons of easy recipes

@Nora blw has a lot of benefits to baby, including learning hand eye coordination, chewing and knowing how much they are able to physically bite, this is a skill that takes longer when babies are puree fed. It also allows babies to be a part of family meal times and others to eat at the same time. Babies can chew and bit perfectly well without teeth. Personally my baby was eating meatballs and spaghetti at 6 months and she managed it perfectly fine! @Nell honestly look at what you normally cook for meals and just adapt things slightly to be easy for baby to hold. Steamed veggies, pasta, fingers of meat. Fried egg cut into strips or omelette, pancakes, toast. My baby likes a bagel with melted cheese, and slices of ham just how they are... I try not to think about it too much and just give her whatever I'm eating tbh

@Charlie Oh my God, guys, you really don’t need to convince me in order to do BLW with your kids. Just do what feels right for you. you totally don’t need to get me on board to do BLW with your kids. Just go ahead and do your thing!

@Nora assuming you didn't mean to tag me because I haven't responded to your comments
