Squirmy baby

My baby is constantly grunting and squirming at night when we have him in the bassinet. We’ve used gas drops and gripe water and hold him upright for 30 mins after breastfeeding him but it seems to not make much of a difference. Any tips on how to help my baby be more peaceful at night? This is also causing him to wake up, only way he will sleep then is by being held which not only kills my arm but also means I don’t get any sleep. The times he does sleep through the grunting in the bassinet, he makes so much noise that I can’t sleep through it. We get him swaddled, sound machine on, dark room, perfect temp but nothing helps him sleep peacefully. He’s currently 6 weeks old.

Totally same. I heard they stop the grunting and squirming around 3 months

Sounds like active sleep which is super normal for newborns, you could swaddle which will help but personally I’d just ride it out as new research shows swaddling isn’t the best for development x

@Chloe what do you use in replacement of a swaddle? I was told that without swaddling the baby will jerk himself awake

I’ve just spoken to my health visitor about this and she spoke of their digestive system and your baby learning to coordinate their muscle movements to pass the gas. She said to complete massages twice daily which should help pass wind. Also highlighted babies go through a developmental stage between 4-6weeks

I think it’s just a case of ride it out unfortunately! My LO hated being swaddled so we used a sleeping bag instead. She was a very loud sleeper but it did settle down around the 4 month mark x

@Dhishya we use a sleeping bag with arms out or a togged baby grow, they do jerk themselves awake but that’s protective against sids - I think different midwives /areas have different guidance. Around 10 weeks it gets a lot better x

Can someone tell me more about this swaddle thing is it really not good fr them ? because my daughter is 5 weeks and I swaddle her which tends to help her sleep most times when she's not sleeping on my chest. But she does grunt a squeal after feedings. Doctor told me that it's normal because when she feeds she's getting air in her belly too. And that her belly is like a Balloon. She said to just try to burp her after every ounce.

No tips just solidarity! Mine is 6 weeks and doing the same, seems to be no rhyme or reason to it despite our efforts

My baby had been doing this a lot as well but it has settled down significantly in the last couple of weeks. She's 8 weeks old now
