Royal Preston Hospital… Experiences?

Anyone who’s given birth at RPH (not the birth centre) the actual maternity ward, what is it like? what’s your experiences? Are there birth pools there or just the ward beds? What else is in the rooms? Can partners stay overnight once baby is born? I want to know it alllll 💗

I’m not sure about the delivery suite as I never made it into there I was in the ward having an induction and ended with a c section but yes afterwards on the ward with baby partner can stay over for however long but they are just leather chairs that pull out and my partner never had a pillow so I would recommend bringing a pillow, even for yourself because the pillows are soo thin like paper 😂🩷🩷

Hey, I think some of the rooms have pools but not all. I think they tend to have birthing balls and if not, they can get you one. Partners can stay overnight, something I really appreciated because I know other hospitals aren’t so accommodating. Can’t really remember much else :p

I had a brilliant experience in the ward! We had our own private room which was huge and had a pool and separate bathroom and bath and shower. Your partner can stay but as mentioned, they only have the pull out leather chair so isn’t very comfy for them x

Hey! I got rushed into RPH after wanting to give birth at Chorley Birth Centre. Sadly things didn’t go to plan. I can’t fault RPH at all, they’ve been incredible in every way. They do have rooms with birth pools so just make sure they’re aware that it’s your preference and they’ll get you moved into one if your birth situation allows (sadly mine didn’t). I’ve also been kept in for a week since the birth and my partner has been able to stay with me for the full time. No questions asked. You can also have visitors from 2-7pm I think it is but again they’re pretty relaxed, they do ask for only 2 visitors at the bedside at any one time though so just be mindful or that. If you’re planning on breastfeeding then you’ll have access to so much support. All the midwives are so knowledgeable & even nct support staff walk around everyday to offer more assistance. Only bad thing is the parking. But you can utilise the 20 min bay at the front of the unit for quick drop offs xx

My room had a pool in (inflatable one) I didn’t use it as I was induced and had hormone drip & epidural. Partners can stay over night which is a god send! I had an amazing experience all 3 births. Staff lovely and can have a laugh with them. The Mat ward you share a room with 3 other ladies, and there is a wet room there too with toilet and shower and shower seat. It does get a little warm on the wards. I gave birth early March and I had to use my small portable fan to help me cool down. So depending on when you are having your baby I’d take one especially if your due in the summer x

Heeeyyy, I gave birth to my son there in 2023. There’s a birthing centre attached to the hospital that has a pool. The actual wards don’t have a pool but have a bath that can be used (this is on the ward not in the room) I think there’s a few rooms that does have a pool. I stayed a few nights after giving birth and my experience was lovely, the staff were so lovely and helpful, they would take my little one some night just so I could get some sleep and he’d return with a hand knitted hat and matching blanket. This was my first child and I did have a difficult birth.

@Lisa Marie How does it work, so you give birth in a room of your own and then they move you onto a ward with other mums once baby is here?x

I feel like I’m just gonna repeat everyone, great experience, my delivery suite did have a pool. The leather chair does fold out into a completely bed ask the nurse they’ll show you. Parking beyond sucks I wanted to used the birthing centre but for health reasons I was advised against, however, they did offer to recreate the vibe, ie the pool, sensory lights, music (if you want) etc. … I didn’t opt for all of that but the staff was very willing & facilitating

@Amy yes they take you up to Labour & Delivery where you are in a room on your own. Then once you have had baby after a few hours they take you onto the Maternity Ward were you on in a room with other women. Xx

I’ve had 2 c sections but some rooms on the delivery ward do have pools but not all so it could just depend if there’s one available at the time. There’s a bathroom with shower and toilet etc in each room. You then get transferred to the maternity ward with other mums afterwards but your partner can stay which is good. Both my experiences weren’t great tbh but I’ve heard many good stories. Good luck!

Absolutely amazing hospital x
