Is fasting ok while pregnant?

I know this is something I should ask my doctor but I would like to get input from other Christian moms. I’ve been wanting to fast but I’m currently 22 weeks pregnant. I feel bad because I know how important fasting is and I’m planning on breastfeeding right after I give birth so I feel like at this point I won’t be able to fast for a long time.

God knows your heart. I totally understand your feeling but when we had a time of fasting before Easter or during Christmas time I talked to my pastor and he said that it’s important to take care of the baby. God knows we would love to take part but He also knows we are carrying His son or daughter in our womb. You can make safe and healthy changes but baby needs all the nutrition to grow.

Intermittent fasting for short periods of time is probably okay as long as you are of a healthy weight or even over weight (like me 😀) But you really do want to prioritize healthy and nutritious foods, getting your carbs and proteins etc… I would not cut calories. If you are gonna fast for a day, try to fit those calories in throughout the week to make up for it if you are doing this. But if it’s only once in a while… like for a special occasion, it won’t harm anything (Not medical advice, obviously.) Talk to a nutrition specialist if you can as well and see if they can come up with a calorie plan that makes room for you to fast. But also, fasting while a spiritual discipline should not become vanity. Be careful about your motives for fasting and whether or not it is spirit lead or by the flesh. Your baby’s health it’s important too and we are called to serve others before ourselves; and that includes your baby in the womb

I agree with Janis! Don’t fast just to say you fasted. Some seasons you may not fast at all and it’s totally okay. Fasting benefits us. It doesn’t do anything for God per say. God totally understands you being pregnant and breastfeeding. He’s not going to be mad if you don’t fast for a while due to those reasons. It’s not that you don’t want to, it’s that it’s not wise to do it given how demanding pregnancy and breastfeeding is on the body. Fasting wrong has sent people to the hospital. I’m not saying that to scare but for you to really consider your options. If you’re gonna fast, I strongly suggest doing it for short amounts of time. Like a few hours a day for a day or 3 tops. Let me just add BIBLICALLY fasting is from good or certain foods (like the Daniel fast). Anything else is CONSECRATION. You can’t “fast” things or entertainment.

Don’t fast all food but fast other things like junk food or candy or soda or like social media or watching tv. Stuff like that. It’s about your heart and what you do during the time

No, it really is not safe to fast during pregnancy. I wanted to so many times too, but it's not healthy for you or baby. I completely agree with @Gabrielle that you could fast other things besides food. It is about the heart and God knows our heart.

I won't say what you should or shouldn't do. But when my church did a fruits and veggies only fast (breakfast and lunch) during lent while I was breastfeeding , I made it a vegan fast instead. It was still hard and still felt like I was fasting.

Fasting isn’t always food. Fasting to my understanding is something you are willing to give up for God and during that time of fasting focusing more on him. And it’s supposed to be an intimate experience with God. Matthew 6:17-18. I want to give an example. Someone might have a problem with scrolling on their phone too much, being on social media A LOT and not enough time in the word. That person may want to fast from their phone and use that time to work on their relationship with God. So again, it doesn’t have to be food unless you feel like you need help in that department. Hope that helps!
