Steroid injection?

So I have had my c section date through for the 2nd of June, because of GD I will be having her at 38 weeks. The consultant asked me to think about if I wanted the steroid injection for her lungs or not. But went on to say how they have actually found it more damaging in older babies and has studies that link it to autism? Is anyone else having to make this call? I had heard of steroids being used for premies not 38 weeks? I am torn 🫣

Yes I thought this was for premies I had to have my daughter at 36 weeks and had to have the steroid injections. Maybe get another opinion? X

I was also told that the studies into the steroid injections have links with autism and adhd, I have my growth scan on 13th to see what date I will be given due to large baby and hypertension, so not in current position to make this call but could be so also trying to find out more

Hi! I hope you don’t mind me asking but when did they decide you would have a c section for the GD? 🥰

They do offer them up to 38 weeks as baby is still technically 'early' at this point even though they are classed as full term. I work in maternity currently and had this discussion with a few midwives the other day. The general consensus was that they didn't understand the recommendation and that research has shown steroids are not needed at this point, currently no evidence to say that they are effective at this gestation. Steroid injections are also very painful, all the midwives I spoke to said at 38 weeks they would not opt for steroids

@Poppy Amelia I will have a chat with my midwife about it too, I think it just took me by surprise the consultant was so against them too! 🤔

@Serena good luck with your scan! Our next is the 19th 🙂 x

@Chelby I had an induction in my first pregnancy that ended in an emergency c section, so I have been opting for a c section from the beginning. Even more now she needs to be early I wouldn’t do an induction again x

@Beth ah interesting! The consultant did make it sound like it was an old practice they were trying to work their way out of? Do they give them to people who are having natural births that are going to be before 39 weeks to or is it just c sections?

I had to have my little boy via section at 36 weeks exactly. They offered steroids when I was first admitted at 35 weeks even though at the hospital I was under the cut off date was 36 weeks. Straight away I said yes but then the consultant came and spoke to me about the associated link with autism and how at 36 weeks it’s very much a suggestion rather than a recommendation. I didn’t do the steroids in the end, my little boy did end up needing to be resuscitated and was in the NICU followed by the SCBU but we were home by the time he was a week old and he’s now 2 and absolutely perfect. Personally I’m glad we made the choice we did because if he had ended up being autistic, which would have been absolutely fine, or with other issues I’d have always then questioned if it was because of the choice I made and nothing could have proved it either way x

I was doing some research into this as we have been advised baby will be delivered at 37 weeks due to GD, and one of the common side effects of the injections is babies having a hypo when they are born, so I was going to choose not to, as this seemed really counter intuitive, as it is already a concern with the GD

@Gemma I think this is what I would struggle with would be not knowing if it was something I had done x

@Christina yer they said I would have to stay in for 24 hours after having the steroids because it will mess with the sugars so much, I have heard the hypo when they are born is fairly common they pop you in a drip during birth to try to help and will monitor after, we will be in a few days after the c section I assume they will keep monitoring her in that time till she levels out 🙂

@Megan I’m part of the UK GD group on Facebook, and a lot of people have been able to go home after 24 hours, so I am hopeful that our little ones will be ok with their sugar tests. But I would much prefer them to be healthy and me to stay in a couple of days then rush home

@Christina even after a c section? They had me in for 3 days after surgery last time 😬

@Megan So I think every trust is different, but if bubba passes their sugar tests, you will be going home after 24, same as a low risk pregnancy and c section. Don’t quote me on this, but lots of the ladies have been home by the following day, so I am hopeful, but packing extra bits just in case

I have my c section date for the 2nd June, I will be 38 weeks I’ve refused the steroid injection, my consultant didn’t seem very confident in the steroid injection either x
