Can it really be normal?

My 2.5 year old daughter is ill all the time, and I’m not exaggerating when I see it’s relentless. She’s had tonsillitis 4 times since Christmas and was sent home today from nursery with symptoms of tonsillitis again. I’ll be taking her to the GP tomorrow to confirm. If it’s as I expect, that’ll be 5 times this year! She only had tonsillitis two weeks ago. She’s at nursery four full days a week, but is missing so much. I’m at my wits end and feel like I can’t work (my full time job) around her being poorly all the time. Tell me it gets better? She’s been going to nursery for 14 months. The toddler room is just savage on her immune system.

Since it’s tonsillitis frequently, have they talked about getting her tonsils taken out? I don’t know how it is for children but when I was in high school, I caught tonsillitis and then continuously caught every throat infection possible and at least once a month so I had to get my tonsils taken out and I haven’t had issues since

At the last appointment they just said they’d log it, when I said this was the 4th case within 4 months, but now this will be the 5th occasion, which I feel is very excessive!

@Charlotte maybe they can recommend a ear, nose, and throat doctor

It’s not normal. My boy has been doing 4 full days a week for 2.5 years, and hasn’t been ill enough to miss nursery in over a year (chicken pox last Easter)

My son had tonisilitis frequently too but not as much as your little one. 4 times in 10 months. He is a mouth breather and in January we were referred to ENT. 5x since December is definitely concerning, I would; Ask your GP for an ENT referral Keep a diary of each episode (dates, symptoms, temperature, treatment)

I hope this helps Current UK Criteria for Tonsillectomy in Children According to SIGN 117 and NHS ENT practice: A child may be considered for tonsillectomy if they have: Recurrent sore throats due to tonsillitis, with all of the following: At least 7 episodes in the last 12 months, OR At least 5 episodes per year in each of the last 2 years, OR At least 3 episodes per year in each of the last 3 years AND The episodes are well-documented, and Have severe enough impact to interfere with normal functioning (e.g. eating, sleeping, attending nursery/school, affecting family life)

My son and I used to get sick constantly (like back to back to back illnesses, sick 90% of the time for a year) turns out I was very deficient in vitamin D, since increasing my supplements (added a lot for myself and vitamin D drops for my son) we are both sick waaaaay less

Tonsillitis again confirmed at the GP this morning, we’ve got another 5 days of antibiotics. 5 occasions now since 13th Jan. relentless…

@Idil we’ve been told this morning that it’s logged on her records as the 5th occasion, but their referral is 7 episodes in 12months for ENT as you said. Thanks for your guidance.
