Cervical check

When would you suggest a cervical check if at all? I'm unsure if its worth it.

Unless it’s going to give you useful information there’s no real reason to do it. For example… it’s been HOURS and you’re not sure if labor is actually progressing. Checking if the cervix has dilated and changed will tell you if you’re moving along. But, checking just because? It’s not a reliable indicator on WHEN you’ll start labor. It’s not a reliable indication of ANYTHING other than if your cervix is changing. It is invasive and raises your risk of infection, so unless it is necessary (or you choose to have one) to check the progress of your labor, there’s no need. Also, just to add a little note, doc or nurse should not be checking you every like two hours or whatever benchmark they say in the hospital. Every hospital is different and some have that policy but it doesn’t do a whole lot for you. Once you’ve confirmed that the cervix Is changing and you are indeed in labor, then you don’t really need it again. The only other time it would be useful is if they’re checking to see…

If they’re checking to see if you are at 10cm and ready to push. They do this for epidural moms because you can’t tell or feel it sometimes and pushing prematurely can do harm to your body and baby. But, if you’re going without meds you can definitely feel it and know when to push. So, they’re useful for checking if your cervix is changing (to confirm that you are in labor) and if it’s time to push. Any other time is just for funsies lmfao. I didn’t get a single check through my whole pregnancy, labor, and birth. The only time they offered was at my 4 week check up and I declined. If you want one for peace of mind or just to see, then get one! You’re in control of your body.

I honestly don’t even think it’s worth it unless you’re actually having contractions or showing signs of labor. You can stay at 1-3 cms dilated for weeks so it really doesn’t tell you much unless you’re in labor

No. Never got mine checked until I was in full blown labour they were checking me to see if I could push yet without tearing. I was 7-8cm when they checked so another 2-3hrs for me until push until I’m fully dilated.

I only had one during labour when I arrived at hospital, for them to know how dilated I was, but I could have refuse it as well (UK). Are you concerned about something?

There’s really no point in doing them as you can be not dilated at all and have baby the next day. It’s just invasive and honestly discouraging more often than helpful. I didn’t do one with my first until I was being induced… my induction method required it. With this one I didn’t till I was ready to get sweeps in attempt to evict. Even as a second time mom the checks are very discouraging and annoying.

@Marie🩵🩷💚 No concern, they just start offering it at a certain point. Wasn't sure of if I wanted to or not :)

I never got cervical checks until I was in labor. I never really understood why women wanted them before that. I don’t have health issues and wanted to let my babies come when they were ready though.

@Dana 🦅♥️🤍💙 I'm honestly afraid that the check may have baby wanting to come sooner and honestly my baby needs to wait until at least 38 weeks minimum. No earlier. Lol

Not worth it. Gives you no accurate information on when labor will start

I didn't have one until I was in active labor, doctor didn't see a need for early checks and said they can be painful and cause anxiety. Glad I didn't get any before, didn't feel it at the 8cm when I got to the hospital to have baby. Wouldn't have made a difference to know before 🤷‍♀️
