New fear unlocked

My baby choked on a gerber melt and a piece of a cardboard box all in the span of this week and I am freaking out each time she coughs when she drinks too fast/goes down the wrong pipe, eating store purée food, breastfeeding, spit. I keep having a panic attack and an anxiety attack at the same time while trying to stay calm as I’m helping her dislodge whatever she’s coughing on. I’ve been so scared each day when I wake up that she might choke on something and die if I’m not fast enough to help her. I can feel my heart beating super fast as I’m writing this. how do I deal with this fear? 😭😭😭

she has no teeth by the way. I’m so scared of letting her try solid stuff

I’m so sorry this happened- that’s so scary. Did she have much experience with solids before the gerber melt?

My little 9 month old girl is barely cutting one bottom tooth and she also choked on a yogurt melt when I first gave it to her. I felt so bad with mom guilt. She just needed to learn to use her gums. I tried again a week later and now she eats them no problem. I give her a tiny bit of water to wash it down afterward. I feed her little pieces of soft fruit and she does fine. I still give mostly puréed food with ideas from the Solid Starts app. She still chokes on milk sometimes depending on the nipple on the bottle as not all of hers are the same number. Babies learn quickly, you just have to keep trying to introduce the new food/texture. Coughing is a protective reflex, meant to keep fluid out of the lungs. Have you taken a child CPR course or looked at videos of how to assist when a child is choking? This may give you more self-efficacy in the face of any potential scenario.

Was she actually choking (turning purple) or gagging (red and coughing)? Gagging is good, they are learning the boundaries of eating. Have you taken a baby cpr class? That might help! Or one of those choking devices (I don't remember the name).

I know it is scary but if she is coughing, she is fine. Coughing is good. Chocking is silent
