Vitamin D

My baby is 11 weeks old and exclusively breastfed. I am really struggling to a) remember the vitamin D drops and b) get him to swallow the vitamin D drops! Does anyone have any tips? I’ve tried putting it on the nipple and I’m not sure how much he gets, straight in his mouth but he dribbles it out and in a bottle but it changes the texture of the milk and he refuses to take it. Also, I take vitamin D daily so is he getting some through me? I’m stressing! If anyone also knows of a brand where it’s concentrated so I don’t have to try and give him 1ml that would also help! Thank you x

Don’t stress! Are you taking him outside at all? That should be enough vitamin D for him, so don’t worry if he’s not getting the full dose every day

Are you using a dummy? We used to put drops in her mouth and then dummy straight in, as the dummy encourages the suck and swallow motion. Even if you're taking vit D, he still needs to take it too.

I'm using the prohealth drops, it's literally one teeny tiny drop a day. I've put it on my nipple before and seemed to be fine but mostly just put it in her bottle ox expressed milk and give it a good swirl, not noticed any change in the milk at all! https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09T6SP356?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I’ve fully forgotten to give my boy his! I also never gave my first baby anything and he’s a happy and healthy 2 yr old now so try not to worry. Some is better than none! ❤️

Thanks so much everyone! We spend a lot of time outside everyday walking with the dogs, and I’ve just purchase the ProHealth drops! 🤞🏼🤞🏼 x

I used to put the bottle of drops next to the kettle so that every morning when I made a cup of tea I would see it and remember to do it. Just do your best getting them in without him dribbling them out, there’s not much more you can do. You could try a small syringe, like the ones for collecting colostrum. He won’t be getting any through you (or incredibly tiny amounts) as it doesn’t transfer well through breastmilk (or any food) which is why we’re all advised to take a supplement of it in the uk since we can’t get enough of it from the sun.

I exclusively breast feed and we give vit D, it is hard to remember honestly some days i do also, i changed her medication area to a shelf above her changing area so i cant forget. I give her the full dose of it orally (unfortunately once i get her distracted and get her to smile) she cringes and the immediately give her a paci or bottle while making her laugh so she is distracted even tho she knows its gross lol. Currently writing this while shes asleep on my chest but she haaates the new brand we are giving her she loved the old one ill post both when i am done skin to skin:)

I’ve never given my son vitamin D because he gets enough from the sunshine and the outside, especially in summer. Also be very careful, they don’t tell you but you can take too much vitamin D and it can be toxic. In summer you genuinely get enough from being outside a couple hours a day ☀️

I use well baby vitamin d drops and put them directly into my LO’s mouth (into the cheek) using a calpol syringe ☺️ I was doing drop by drop on the nipple whilst breastfeeding but it got everywhere and took forever to do everyday!
