Keep it covered, wash hands CONSTANTLY and you should be okay. I have a 22 month old and have done the same as your partner through two outbreaks, and panicked each time. So far, my daughter has never caught them. I am obsessive about not touching my face even with the cold sore patched over, washing my hands constantly, and being every aware of little hands trying to touch my face, and washing her hands immediately if she does accidentally catch my face. For your partner in future, I find taking l-lysine can prevent coldsores. I haven't been taking it as am still breastfeeding and cannot find anything on the safety of taking it whilst breastfeeding so erring on the side of caution. But before getting pregnant, I took 1000mg daily and literally didn't get a coldsore for ten years after getting several painful outbreaks a year.
My husband had one when our boy was just a few weeks old, had been handling baby etc he kept it covered, constant hand washing, stripped the beds etc and hand minimal contact for a few days and our boy was absolutely fine x
Thank you so much for your replies everyone, makes me feel a lot better! 💞
I had a cold sore come out when my baby was like 6 weeks old. I just put the compeed patches on it and she was fine 🙂
I had a cold sore when my son was first born and I just made sure I wore the compeed patches, didn’t kiss him and washed my hands every time I changed my patch. I also use Tea tree oil on my cold sores and it dries it up and gets rid of the gunk and everything a lot quicker. Just use a cotton bud to dab it on x
I have 9 months old , coughing badly since nearly a month. Do everything for him because I am a single mum. He is absolutely fine
To all on this thread incase this helps - i used to get plagued with coldsores all the time, my hormones around the time I got my period or at times of stress would bring it on. I was scared of having outbreaks with my baby so did some research and have found a way of not getting them. You can take a medication called acyclovir. It's a tablet that you can take to treat a coldsore but also you can take a "maintenance dose" which prevents them. It has worked perfectly for me and I highly recommend it!
My little boy is 7 months and I've had quite a few outbreaks since I had him (thanks hormones). Obviously I was kissing my child before - even the morning before an outbreak (quite scary). I also gave birth to him with a cold sore outbreak which made me paranoid about skin to skin etc. but it's all been fine so far as I was paranoid about my distance. I imagine it's harder with a more active child, so your partner will have to be careful to keep distance and wash hands etc. Sounds like he's done the right thing to cover with a patch! 🫶🏻
