Sleeping suits

Hello, feeling a bit overwhelmed with what to buy for baby as I’m a first time mum.. where do you start! I’ve got a Snuzpod 2… due in June so it will be relatively warm.. do you put baby in sleep suits? If so, please can anyone reccomend some to me? Also… no blankets right as it can flip in their faces? My friend suggested putting a baby in a sleepyhead (now a ‘duck a tot’) and then in the snuzpod… while others telling me to baby straight on mattress. Anyway any advice/ stories would be really useful. I don’t just want to buy pointless things and waste money. Jess xx

From what I’ve read you shouldn’t leave baby to sleep unsupervised in the nests, we bought a sleepyhead for our little one to use like on the sofa ect when we’re downstairs as both my little brothers were put in one and my parents swear by it but yeah I’ve read no overnight/unsupervised sleeping

You can use blankets (the cellular ones) but they should be firmly tucked in and be lower than the baby's shoulders when their feet are at the very end of the mattress. That way when they wriggle up in the night they won't end up under it. I've bought some swaddles and also have some 0.5 tog sleeping bags. How much to dress them in will depend on the room temperature. There are some guides on the internet that say what they should wear at certain temps. Key is to keep them cooler rather than warmer as if they overheat that is when there is a risk. They will likely wake and cry if they are cold.

FTM due in June too, we have a next to me crib and a moses basket. Some babies like to be in a smaller space so our plan is if she doesn’t settle in the next to me crib we will put the moses basket in there until she grows. We have also got swaddles and sleeping bags, again every baby is different and like different things. Amazon do sleeping bags for under £10 and Asda do swaddle bags for under £10 - we have just gone for cheaper options and will buy more once she’s here and knows what she likes. Just be mindful of the togs, there are charts online to show what tog you should use in which temperatures

Thanks so much. It is amazing how much you ladies know. I hadn’t even heard of cellular blankets until you mentioned them! Will look online now. Many thanks for your help xx

Have a read on the lullaby trusts website for safe sleep practice, flat on their back on the mattress is what’s recommended 🙂 the sleepyheads arent recommended for a variety of reasons, we only used one for naps downstairs after he outgrew his Moses basket and could roll himself off/clear his airway in his sleep, sleep sacks can be used, there are a range of different togs like duvets have, there are charts which compare the rooms temperature to which tog baby should wear and which clothes they should have on underneath. Sometimes they don’t work well on smaller newborns as they can wriggle down in to them so swaddling or a blanket can get better for a few weeks 🙂 Cellular and muslin blankets are also fine to be swaddled in or tucked in to the mattress below the armpit level I would definitely recommend getting a Tommie tippee grow egg which shows temperature and changes colour depending on the temperature so it’s easy for you to see if it’s getting too warm or cold. We used sleep bags for my first so I didn’t have to worry about tucking blankets, so have bought some 1 tog ones for this baby. A gro egg is super useful to monitor the temp of the room, and then the above chart can be used as a guide as to how many layers to dress them in. Emphasis on guide, my boy was always cold and needed an extra layer than the guides said, so trust your instinct :)

Fantastic ladies you are fantastic I got a Gro egg off Marketplace which is Fab. I’m thinking as it’s June time the temp will be 20 to 24 degrees so I might get a tog 1 and then a tog 1.5 to be on the safe side. Really helpful thank you. Thanks for the advice about the sleepy head, I’ll just use that for downstairs sofa time when we are all Chilling together. Any recommendations for sleeping bag websites that won’t break the bank? Thanks all

@Jessica mamas and papas have a sale on at the minute so we picked up a love to dream swaddle today but we’ve also grabbed a few sleeping bags from Tesco 🥰

Thank you :)
