Silent reflux ?

My baby is almost 3 weeks old and I’m struggling massively with her being uncomfortable around feeding. She won’t be out down on her back, she just screams unless in a deep sleep, she also screams out in pain whilst asleep sometimes, her breathing is really noisy, constantly grunting, she has hiccups almost after every feed. I make sure I wind her really well and hold her upright as long as I can. She isn’t projectile vomiting every time she has been fed, she is a little sicky but nothing major so I’m just wondering is this silent reflux ? She is also just very irritable, rarely ever seems to relax.

This is what I hear all the time whether she is asleep or not

Reflux is often a sign of a cows milk allergy which by the sounds of the grunting, noisy breathing/wheezing and hiccups as well as being sick (doesn’t have to be projectile) it sounds like symptoms of a milk allergy. It may be worth getting in touch with a doctor on Monday and asking to trial a hydrolysed formula or even some sort of thickener if they don’t think it’s an allergy. Feel free to give me a message as we went through a while ordeal with doctors for 5.5 months x

@Julia I did think this may also be the case as she has such a sore bottom aswell! Been using bepanthem as the health visitor said that’s best for it and it keeps going and coming back, her toilet trips are always ‘runny’ sorry for the tmi! I will 100% contact the gp on Monday as it’s hard seeing her so uncomfortable especially with a toddler running around also x

My little boy is 19 months and had silent reflux AND cmpa. It was tough times. Send a message if you need ❤️ x

@Jade I personally wouldn’t use bepanthem as I find it does nothing but also contains almond oil in it. The white metanioum (think that’s how you spell it) or sudocrem the best x

This kind of just sounds like a 3 week old baby to me? Hiccups and needing help burping and farting are all totally normal. They're all super noisy while sleeping. All of their poops are runny because they're on a full liquid diet...the concern would be mucus. You also can't really do anything about reflux and they will for the most part grow out of it. We had to burp our girl every 20-30ml and do bicycle legs all the time. Medicating babies for reflux is no longer a recommended evidence based best practice. Reflux is not always a sign of a CMPA which is actually quite rare and just kind of a hot topic right now. Changing formula on them isn't something often recommended because that can just further upset their tummies. Speak to your health provider about it...they're the experts!
