Conscious during C-Section

So I am newly pregnant, well 20 weeks now and never had any pregnancies before this, I don’t know much & just learning through others experiences. I’ve only just realised during a c-section you are conscious & awake, which has made me a little scared. Could anyone share there experiences, and how that works 🫣

I had an emergency section and honestly being awake was fine I actually enjoyed the fact I could hear the doctor saying what exactly they was doing. I got to hear my babies first cry. Even getting a good laugh when my partner hit the deck. The anaesthetist was talking to me the whole time it was lovely

Also had an emergency and it was actually a positive experience considering! You get numbed essentially from below your arms down and don’t see anything (unless you ask to) - partner can be there the whole time chatting, and the surgical and midwife team do the same. Then suddenly your baby is there! The rest you kind of forget as you’re so swept up into looking at this new life. The most I felt was some pressure x

They keep a tarp up so you can’t see the surgery. It is a bit nerve-wracking, but all you feel is some pressure-no pain. Then they hand you your baby and they stitch you up! After they’re all done, you go into recovery and hang with baby. The absolute worst part is when they take your catheter out and you have to pee for the first time after that. Now THAT was painful. lol. Also, recovery took me a long time and I had weird neurological symptoms afterwards for a while.

The actual section is fine you can’t feel anything other than some tugging and pressure. It’s the recovery that can be really hard after a section

you just get numbed from the chest down, honestly it’s the most surreal lovely and chilled experience. You’re not exhausted from labour, you’ve got a fab team around you who do this 4 times a day most days and you get your partner right by you. My recovery was fine, I was driving by 3 weeks. I’d say by 8 weeks I was back to normal physically (not weight, I mean physical pain etc) but the scar was tingly for 9 months. It was just a lovely experience and I’d happily do it again x

Had an emergency c section. Had a spinal, they checked like 4 times I was numb. Catheter in. Shaved area that needed shaving (id let it grow wild). Screen up and I just sang to myself and played with the blue screen. 30 seconds later baby was lifted and I continued to sing to myself until my daughter was at my face. Heard some sucking and felt some tugging but other then that I just focused on going dodododododoooo lots. My recovery was rough. But I had bruised ribs which didn't help, due to the nature of my emergency they needed her out fast and so they pushed her out. Any longer and they probably would have cut up aswell as along

I also had a lovely experience. I could have known playlist and my midwife had my phone to take a video and photos. My partner was there, the medical team were really friendly. I loved it. The tugging feeling is a but weird but I highly recommend it. Recovery is quite tough but I had to either be I dived or have a sexton and I felt a section would be safer and under control so it met my needs. Don’t be scared!

Such bad typing sorry - I had to be induced or have a section

I had an emergency with my first then a planned with my second which are obviously very different experiences, but both were actually perfectly fine! The only negative with my first was I had horrible shakes, but they was due to me spiking an insanely high fever after five days of labor and getting to 10cm dilated, which was one of the reasons for the emergency c-section in the first place. With the emergency I had the epidural earlier in labor and with the planned one I had a spinal. First one was over so fast we barely comprehended it was happening as it was a real emergency. Second one was calm, had my playlist on in the room and chatting with my husband and the anesthetist the whole time. We got to film the ‘lion king moment’ which was cool. Both times as soon as baby was checked they were placed on my chest for skin to skin while the doctors finished up down below. Couldn’t feel or see a thing.

Thank you all, really grateful for sharing your experiences, it’s made me feel a whole lot better! 💖

I had an elective C-section with my second. I had a spinal block so couldn't feel any pain or strong sensations just some tugging. Baby is born really quickly so after that my focus wasn't on the surgery at all so I didn't really notice anything. There was a sheet up so I couldn't see anything below my chest.

I had an unplanned c-section, I was awake and conscious. It’s a surreal feeling but you can’t feel anything except some tugging and pushing but no pain. There was a midwife/nurse who stood near my head the entire time talking to me and keeping me distracted and I had my boyfriend the other side of me also keeping me calm. I was holding my baby on my chest while they stitched me up so was completely distracted for that bit too. I think I was in the operating room for about an hour but I didn’t feel that long. I’m not going to lie the recovery was a little rough, but I think the sooner you’re on your feet the easier it is. I was up at walking about 8 hours after (as soon as the epidural wore off) and kept on top of my painkillers that the hospital offered me. I had to rely on my parter to pass me the baby etc for the first 2-3 weeks until I could lift him (heavy things can increase the scar reopening). In all honestly I was petrified of having a c-section but it wasn’t extremely bad
